Fishing: A Guide to Fresh and Salt-Water Fishing

A Classic
A great little book, even decades later. I've referred to it since I was a boy, and now occasionally give it to the elementary-aged children of friends... even in today's tech-driven world, most of them love it :)

Excellent little book I studied as a kid in FL
Excellent little book I studied as a kid in FL. I still like it and bought myself a new one and one for my son. I still have my original bit will keep that as a worn keepsake. I bought this as a clean new book to refer to. Has cool drawings from the 60’s just thumbing through the book will make you want to go fishing. Probably one of my favorite books from childhood. Good stuff. Get you one!

Outdated but of sentimental value
I like the Golden Guide books. I had a couple as a child 50 years ago, and over the past couple years I've ordered a few for sentimental reasons, Pond Life and Weather being my favorites. The Golden Guide to fishing is okay. It has an original copyright date of 1967, and a renewal in 1987. Some of the discussion of tackle, particularly rods and reels, lines too, and tackleboxes, is outdated, as are some other things such as landing a northern pike by gripping its eye sockets. Nevertheless, the book has some of that charming old character to it. It may even serve as a first fishing guide for young kids, to be supplemented by current literature shortly thereafter.

I really like it. I have little experience fishing and is ...
This is the second time I'm buying this book - I lost the first one. I really like it. I have little experience fishing and is a good basic reference (such as for the knots you need to know but will forget if you don't frequently fish). Also, it's a small book and easily fits in my fishing gear.

Fishing, A golden guide from St. Martin's Press
As a novice angler, I was looking for a definitive guide on how to get a fish on the hook - the right way! I knew that it had to be more then just pot luck. Most of the fishing I do is ocean/river and salt water fishing, because I live near the Jersey shore. Although, after reading Fishing, I'm ready to try fresh water fising now. Well, the Golden Guide on fishing more then met my expectations. When I ordered this little book on fishing, able to fix nicely in my tackle box for on-sight reference, I ordered another fishing book for cross-reference purposes. I didn't have to, because this book covered every conceivable aspect of fishing imaginable from A to Z. Just like a marine preparing for battle, you have to know what field equipment you'll need to be successful. This book helped me to take an angler's review of my tackle box and equipment and update it. If you want to learn how to tie fishing flies by hand then this may not be the right book for you. If you want to learn how to fish and what you will need to be successful then this is the book for you. Rick S from South (New) Jersey

great starter book for kids
Bought this for my 10-year old son who has become obsessed with fishing in the past year. He dove right into it and finished reading it in a matter of a day or two. Handy that it fits into a pocket on his cargo shorts, so he can take it with him and refer to it for knot-tying, line issues, etc. A great beginner book and ongoing resource!

POCKET SIZE HANDBOOK FOR FISHING
I received the Fishing guide in perfect condition. However, I hoped it would be a bit more in depth in it's coverage with each topic. However, I did find that the variety of it's content, was still very interesting. The rating I gave this guide I felt was appropriate, as the handbook contains color illustrations that are artist renderings from the 60's era it appears to me. While the content does touch upon many basic principles that remain pertinent for today's anglers. I would have been happier if the text descriptions could have elaborated a lot more about today's latest tackle, accompanied by actual photographs of tackle, lures etc. that reflect some of the newer fishing methods currently being used by anglers. All in all, the guide does have an accumulation of some very sound and basic fishing instructions and methods that can be applied even today.

Great book with lots of useful information
This is a small book but I was pleasantly surprised by how much useful information it had. It is concise and to the point. It's easy enough for a young kid to read, but informative enough for an adult to find useful. I found it very helpful to help explain fishing terminology and gear to my child, and will certainly use it for myself. It covers everything a good introduction to fishing book would cover, including fishing knots, gear, tackle, lures, etc.

Pocket book. Touch base on everything not in depth. I bring that book with me all the time. ( fish identification). Really good bang for a buck.
