I began buying this series for my 8 year old son, and it catapulted him into longer chapter-book reading! Prior to these books, he was still primarily interested in (longer) picture books and also the various early reader series (like Henry and Mudge, etc.). This series was just the thing to pique his interest in full length chapter books; to spark his interest and curiosity for reading more. I have bought him these mysteries in the six-book sets. He loves them!! We are a family of readers, and while I buy books for the family, I also like each child to own their own, as well. These are some of the ones that are just his. He moved from these on to the Hardy Boys series! But he still loves re-reading these from time to time.

My husband and son read these every night before bedtime. They both have enjoyed the stories very much!

My 9 year old son loves these books. He flies through them. Don't have to worry about exposing him to crudeness or disrespect to adults rebellion in these good reads.

My parents read the first 3 to me at 6 & 7 years old the I start reading them at about 8. I had the first 10 or more Surgar Creek Gang books. My 3 children read and enjoyed them. I finally gave them away to another young person many years ago. I am now 75 and I think they would be good for my twin 7 yr old grandsons. I highly recomend these books even if you are not religious because of the caring behaviour they teach.
