Q: how much will they shrink?

They won't shrink in length but the side pockets will shrink in depth. When I first ordered these almost 3 years ago my entire hand could fit in the side pocket with room to spare. Now I can fit my hand about half way in the pockets. Due to manufacturer changes the front cargo pockets aren't as deep as the same pair of these shorts I have from 2011. Dickies is still good overall though.

Q: Is black actually gray?

Sandstone black a very dark grey

Q: Cell phone pocket on both sides?

Depends which style you buy. Look for the Dickies relaxed fit 13 cargo shorts with the button waist, instead of the clip. My fave, and they will have a small cellphone pocket above and behind the right side cargo pocket. It will fit my 5.7 screen pixel 4a with an OtterBox snuggly, but I use for keys and chapstick etc. My Phone goes in deep back left. Good luck

Q: Do the cargo pockets have zippers?

No. The cargo pockets use velcro closures

Pick one size larger for perfection
