Great idea, ok execution
Main takeaway:If you are interested in a quick read that has decent action, this book can be pretty fun, but don’t expect too much.Me whining:1. The main character still has no emotion. The author has to constantly explain Pilgrim’s motivations and reasoning because otherwise no one would get it.2. Morals, what morals? Piggybacking on my last point, Pilgrim’s cool with putting children in harms way out of a sense of assassin honor or something. For a guy who killed people in their sleep and forced them to commit suicide, he’s got a pretty rosy picture of his fellow murderers (even as he tries to hunt them down solo so they won’t use innocent people as leverage against him or something? In all seriousness, Pilgrim’s all over the place in terms of morals and logic. He borrows and spends tons of cash, unnecessarily in a lot of cases, then starts worrying about money. Pilgrim randomly decides to rip off a guy who’s son he killed and who he previously humiliated because the guy had a bigger room and Pilgrim’s cat told him to. I could go on, but you get the idea——SPOILER—-3. Plot-blocking is a problem. The author had a wonderful setup for a fun little adventure involving a certain head. Sadly, it just sort of gets found by accident and used as a quick way to involve a new-ish character and introduce 2 more.4. Goldfish audience will love this. Whenever Pilgrim has a free moment, he’ll either rehash his angst about something he did (for the hundredth time) or he’ll remind himself what he’s eventually going to do, and why(for the hundredth time). This book would honestly be a good third shorter with nothing missing if the author cut down on the reflection to just once or twice per crisis. Pilgrim can still feel bad. I just don’t need to be told why again. Now that I got that out of my system, I’d like to reiterate that this book’s still an interesting read. The word building’s good and the action is fun. If the author can work on character building, plot progression, and brevity, this would be one of my favorite series. As it stands, I’ll still probably read the next book in the series when it comes out.

Another step for Pilgrim
Book 1 gave us the genesis of Pilgrim and a good backgrounding in this world. This book sees Pilgrim accept his fate and become accepting of it - to a point. He wouldn't be human if he didn't fight. There are more yokai to meet in this volume - including a trip to Diyu. There are questions raised in this book that I want to see answered, yet these questions add to the aura of the story.I cannot ask them as they would constitute giving away too much of a great story.Enjoy!

Book 2 amps up the action, the risks, and the rewards
Author Harmon Cooper continues his fantasy series about Pilgrim, the retired assassin turned rural good guy and advocate for magical creatures.Too bad his former life keeps intruding as assassins seek to kill him and complete the contract on him. He decides to rid himself of the problem once and for all by killing his former teacher, who took out the contract on him. And other assassin teachers who are trying to complete the contract. It turns out assassins are the least of his worries. He's got a half-brother who is a full-blooded demon and out to kill him.Good luck, Pilgrim.

Damn damn great story.
Pilgrim is a damn good story. But of course if you play RPGs the story feels good where you've been before.

This series deserves to be famous - swords and sorcery!
I'm talking video games, graphic novel adaptations, an animated series... you name it, I would buy it. This is the second book in the series, and should definitely be read in order. After spending most of book 1 holed up on the edge of the world, our protagonist dives back into the center of the empire that wouldn't let him go live in peace. Major elements of his backstory, and plenty of hints about some of the bigger themes in store for the rest of the series.Mature themes including graphic violence and discussion of a rape, but if you are a non-kid that loves swords and sorcery, I cannot recommend this book, and the series, enough!!

It's hard to quit when you're an Assassin
Too many damn assassins after you. I really enjoyed the interactions between Danzen (MC), Kudzu (fox), and Jelmay (cat). Reading this was smooth, almost like a dream. I didn't feel a lot of dramatic tension, even when difficult things were going on (perhaps too smooth). A lot of story packed in. The fights were intense and short. A lot of fun to read. I got worried towards the end as there didn't seem to be enough book left to finish it, but it was well done. Great story and series, I think I liked book one more. This one was more almost awesome.Score: 8.8 out of 10

Read this book
I’ve never written a review before... but since I want Harmon Cooper to start on the third book ASAP, I feel I must. Beautifully written, the main character says little bit has such depth it’s incredible. I love how the story is told from the main character point of view rather than jumping between characters from chapter to chapter. Scenes of action and violence juxtaposed with scenes of tranquility and beauty. As good as (if not better than) the first, with the author advancing the characters and story line without it becoming muddled and confused. Download it, read it, and eagerly wait for the third book as I will.

Wait for it...
The twist at the end is what got me. This book moved at a fast pace, going from one task to another at a rapid clip. A fun read, with action and suspense.

Sensational Sequel - Read the Series!
I've been waiting patiently like a good girl for this, after adoring the first book. Worth the wait, I can tell you. What a sequel! I savoured every single word of this adventure, but, having said that, I devoured the book as quickly as I could to find out what happened next.Danzen Ravja, though demon-born, is a very human heady mix of strengths and weaknesses. He doesn't want to assassinate anyone anymore. He just wants to live out the rest of his life in peace without other assassins trying to get their revenge on him. Although as an assassin he would generally work alone, he now constantly seems to be in the company of two shape-shifting yokai. Kudzu, a white fox, and Jelmay, a cat. Jelmay can be a bit of an annoyance and totally selfish, but he has the contacts and the knowledge that Danzen needs. Kudzu, on the other hand, is as unselfish as you could possibly get, beautiful, and wears her heart on her sleeve (or is that tail?). I feel that Danzen and Kudzu are getting closer all the time. They have a mutual respect for each other. Do I see a romance on the cards? Oh, I would love to think so... It could work, he's half-demon after all. I love the yokai, they're so interesting! The story carries straight on from the first book. Danzen has to hunt and put a stop to his potential assassins before they strike. Not an easy task by any means, but one that he has to focus on fully. The fight scenes are wonderful, the characterisations full of energy, and the writing honest, from the heart, and full of lessons for us lesser beings. I won't spoil the story for anyone, but it's so hard not to. I utterly loved this. Can't wait for number three.

Ohhh So many spoilers i can't post
After book 1 this is a big book full of surprises and nice little separations where each part of the story is dealt with. This gives the impression its even bigger and you feel things progress even more than what they do, the best bit is quite a few twists and something this good with lots of excellent writing means i now have to wait even longer before book 3 which is a massive downer. Character development and reader immersion is also a big power up from the 1st so im willing to be quite forgiving in this case.

It's progression baby.
The continuing story of Danzen and his two Yokai companions Kudzu and Jelmay, sees them confronting Danzen's past head on. In order to do this Danzen has to progress and get stronger. We get more back story, we get more quests, we get more crazy characters, we get more weird and wonderful Yokai, we get more funny banter and we get a really entertaining story full of Harmon's unique quirkiness. Fantastic as always

Just brilliant
This is another cracker of a book from Harmon Cooper - if you can cope with the slightly odd/manga-style speech styles in use then this is a superb book, full of action, great quests and really good characters. You won't see the twist a the end coming...or will you...? Buy this book, its great value and just a brilliant read.Bring on volume 3 please!
