Great performance, substandard hardware.UPDATE 9/19/23
I've only had this heater for a few months and I love the performance. I have a 60 gal that I keep at 81, discus .It keeps a steady temp and rarely varies beyond .5 degrees. My only complaint is the hardware. The suction cups are junk. I've had a few incidents where the temp prob came loose and tripped a separate temp alarm. The cups on the contoler fail allowing it to fall pulling the temp prob down. It is a fair amount of weight. Could be a real problem depending on how you have your wires run. Other wise great little unit.Seller contacted me about my review. They promptly sent new hardware. I'll give it a test and update my review as needed.9/18/23. New suction cups failed. Yes the surface was clean. I scraped both surfaces (outside for control unit, inside for thermometer) they held for a while but i came home today to a 91 degree tank. Luckily I got a water change in to get it back down and no fish loss. I really like this heater but the suction cups need to be re-engineered. If i had this tank stocked with discus as planned, I could have been out hundreds of dollars in fish

Great Replacement Policy
The heater I bought originally worked great until the temperature reading started going through the roof, eventually hitting 93 degrees. After I contacted Hygger about the inaccurate readings, they sent me a new heater free of charge which works great.Would definitely recommend the product, it’s convenient and easy to set up. Originally my review was poor but after they sent me a new heater despite me not asking for one I moved up the rating to a 5.

Unit failed. All my fish are dead. I'm devastated.
The media could not be loaded. You know the old adage that you get what you pay for? Well, you are paying for cheaply made Chinese garbage. I bought this heater when I moved from Florida to Massachusetts as my normally room-temperature tank would need heat in the cold northern climes. After I carefully packed up all of my freshwater tropical fish, some of which were over a decade old, we made the 1,500-mile journey. Would that I had stayed in Florida and never needed a heater, because this heater killed all of the fish that I loved and cared for for so long.Out of the box it worked great. It heated to the right temperature and the digital controls were a lot easier to manage than those cheap heaters with a dial on the top. The digital control module, however, does not stay suctioned to the outside of the tank, and the temperature probe and the heating unit itself likewise did not stay suctioned for more than a month initially. Now they come unstuck after a day or two. But these are minor quibbles as, for the past few months, the heater has been doing what it's supposed to do--heat the tank. This wasn't to last. This evening, I went to feed the fish and noticed that despite the heating controls being set to 76 degrees F, the tank was an icy 62 degrees, enough to kill a number of my beloved tropical fish, including two Siamese Algae Eaters that were over ten years old. The red light on the controls indicated that the heating unit was switched on, but the actual heater was producing no heat whatsoever. So now my fish are dead and I'm heading out to an aquarium store to get a new, more reliable heater made in Germany, but nothing will bring back my beloved pets. RIP Larry and Curly and numerous unnamed blue eyed ancistruses, you deserved better than freezing to death.

Good Unobtrusive Heater
The media could not be loaded. First impression unboxing - while the heating element & housing are compact, the unit as a whole is bulky & seems somewhat cumbersome. Partially true in practice, but so far, I'm extremely happy both by its performance & aesthetics. The initial set-up is more than a little tedious, & instructions aren't the best, but w/ minimal effort, the unit can be installed unobtrusively & only minimally affect overall aesthetic of the tank (see video). The cord from the heating unit to the controller is the biggest challengeIt heated my 28 gal by 1 degree in under an hour; good enough performance for me.After about 6 weeks of light use, the heater has kept a constant reading of 79, which is 1.5 degrees off from the 77.5 I get according to a calibrated digital thermometer I trust. Not really a problem for my purposes; as long as it's a consistent error, I can deal, & it stayed consistent thru' several temperature adjustments.I have minor concern about the controller; it seems almost flimsy compared to the sturdy construction of the heating element/housing. Maybe b/c it's plastic while the housing is of other material? Maybe b/c it IS flimsy? I had an issue w/ it not responding when trying to adjust temp & suspected bad wiring job, but power off re-boot solved it.Overall, I'd recommend this heater if size is a big consideration, which it was for me. The parts in the tank are much smaller than most competitors. Also, even if size isn't a concern, it's worth noting that keeping bulk of the electronic components out of the water should help prolong expected lifespan. To sum up - it's worked well for me so far & I like it a LOT better than the bulky, traditional all-one-piece top sticking out of the water hard to adjust unit it replaced.

Great Customer Support
I don't often write product reviews because there are actually many others that do but I needed to let prospective customers of hygger products know about their customer service. I had a hygger 200W Aquarium Heater with External Digital Temperature Controller fail where the temperature reading of the tank only showed double dashes. The controller failed in the off condition so no danger of cooked fish but here in Montana the tank can cool pretty quickly. I contacted hygger support, both by email and through the Amazon seller's contact. hygger literally contacted me the same day and said that a replacement was on its way. I received the replacement in 4 days. WOW. Very please. If you search aquarium heater reviews of different companies you will see that heaters fail. Customer support is important. hygger comes through. I can easily recommend this company. Thank you hygger.
