π΄π'ππ, πππ π πππ πππ πππ πππππ πππ ππππ ππππ ππππ πππ ππππππ.Whip It is a 2009 American sports comedy-drama film directed by Drew Barrymore in her directorial debut and written by Shauna Cross, based on her 2007 novel Derby Girl. The film is co-produced by Barrymore and Barry Mendel. It stars Elliot Page as a teenager from the fictional town of Bodeen, Texas, who joins a roller derby team.βWhip Itβs faithfulness to the material Inspiring it is far from being a matter of coincidence. Founded in 2001, Shauna cross was involved in the early days of the π»πΏπΉπ« π³πππππππ πΉππππππππππ π³πππππ, and she skated under the pseudonym of βMaggie Mayhemβ for the π³ππ π¨ππππππ π«ππππ π«ππππ soon after. Cross had no initial interest in documenting her experiences on these teams in a traditional sense, but after much convincing, decided to create a fictional story using the aforementioned novel and the screenplay that she penned herself as her mediums of choice. Cross avoids drooling out details about the rules of roller derby (while including a brief explanation of its objectives) and instead focuses on providing a grounded story that is reflective of the emotions roller derby as an extracurricular activity (and the comradery it produces) are capable of procuring.Having fallen love with the characters created by Cross, Drew Barrymore's efforts in gathering a cast representative of the complex relationship they have with one another were just as fruitful. Elliott page - who is no stranger to portraying the outskirted misfit - naturally brings a tomboyish charm to Bliss that both matches and clashes with her traditionalist mother and ambivalently supportive father figure; moreover, Cross and Barrymore avoid transformative clichΓ©s pinnacle to more typical coming-of-age dramas, and instead highlights Blissβs internal struggles that are intimately rooted in themes involving self-expression and following your heart (which, is cheesy as hell, but #Iloveit. Sue me.). Even Blissβs largest rival - played by the versatile Juliette Lewis - can't deny the positive energy so unabashedly prevalent in Crossβs script and lends further to a story that is the perfect pick-me-up when negativity is abound.Ultimately - βWhip Itβs simplicity is indicative of its honest and purely intentions. There is a shallowness in its premise in addition to how its conflicts emerge, become intertwined with one another, and are resolved, but dichotomous points of view are juxtaposed without the use of flippant satire or dismissive pretentiousness. Blissβs desire to disembarrass herself from the polished world of pageantry is paired with her own Mother's desire to live vicariously through her - and this, is a behavior that is validated while being an expectation that is subverted respectfully. As others have said before the romantic subplot adds little sustenance to the overarching story, but it is Incorporated in a way that isnβt distracting, deflective, or takes away from the (more important) subject of empowerment and finding your own way.βWhip Itβs relentless #girlssupportinggirls vibes make it a bit of a guilty pleasure on my part, but the way in which it integrates a smorgasbord of emotions most prominent during a period of maturity and vulnerability make it a national treasure in my book. Despite occurring in a fictional reality dominated by the pressure to compromise on passions, Crossβs insinuations are influential and have real-world applications worth entertaining: because if the skates fit, you might as well wear them.

A great story about an unusual subject
I watched this on Prime when I couldn't find anything else that seemed interesting. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film about a cultural subject I've never understood. In addition to Ellen Page (when she identified as a woman), this movie includes a cast of interesting characters who all give really good, believable performances. The bottom line is we all have a right to live our own dreams, regardless of how strange they may seem to our family and friends. I'm pretty selective about movies I add to my my film disc collection, but this one made the cut.

Fun, enjoyable film
Always love watching Elliot Page but this film is full of low-key star power - Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig - the list goes on and on. The best scenes are between Elliot Page and Marcia Gay Harden, who plays her mother, but there are tons of memorable moments. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for a fun, fairly light-hearted film with a lot of heart.

Great cast and fun to watch...
This is one I can say was entertaining. Not one to nominate for the highest awards, but certainly fun and inviting.I was formerly a roller derby ref, so it was great to watch how the movie portrayed the sport... pretty spot on

Amazing acting
The most impressive thing about this film is how Elliot Page portrays a woman. That must have been extremely challenging for a man to pull off. He plays the role as if he was born to it.

The title is Soo misleading, thank goodness for the pictures.
I bought this DVD after reading a review on Youtube.I was watching live recordings,if that makes sense,of WFTDA games. It wasn't quite what I wanted but was entertaining enough not to complain. It certainly had its redeeming features. As others have said,it was produced byDrew Barrymore and is a lighthearted comedy about a teenager who isinspired to take up Roller Derby because her life is boring and going nowhere. The film uses the old sloped skating rink 'destruction' derby rather than the modernFlat Track version so there's some mild violence and anger outburst issues. The film serves as an introduction to the sport and shows how it can becomeaddictive, especially if you make friends easily, even opposing teams supporteach other.I bought it second hand and at the low price, wasn't disappointed. There are some extras too, explaining some scenes in the film.

Awesome movie!
I saw this movie at the cinema when it first came out, my friend liked it but i instantly fell in love with it. I had never heard of roller derby before seeing this movie but it made me look into it and i found out there was a league in my area! Now i am in love with roller derby and i love this movie. It's not just for fans of roller derby though... it's perfect for teenagers, it's a gritty, funny, heartfelt movie (and i love how she handles the guy).

I just think it is great
I really like this film. I really like the light hearted sensibility behind this film. I have rewatched quite a few times, and I cannot think of any criticisms.

Just a really great film
Awesome film, watched it when it came out and loved it. So different to any other coming of age film and Ellen Page is a hottie. Plot is a little boyfriend orientated but just makes the film adorable and re-watchable. Drew Barrymore's personality is all over this, it's just a really good film that you want to watch again or see what happens next immediately. No roller derby bias.
