I Want to Live These Days with You: A Year of Daily Devotions

Bonhoeffer’s life, the struggles, he pain and the joy is shown in almost every word. This book was written in his last days awaiting the Nazi hangman.

The daily readings in this year-long devotional form a good introduction to the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The writings are classic and well-suited to the different seasons of the year, but the book would have been improved greatly by identifying the source of the material in each daily reading and by putting dates or day numbers on each entry.

We are using this in our Session meetings for spiritual development. I have both the book in hard copy and Kindle version. The kindle version does not provide daily time-stamping like the hard-copy which provides a challenge when doing daily devotional. Regarding the content, many of the readings are dark and melancholy but all clearly emergent from the depths of this man's soul have given me much contemplative grist for my own self-examination of faith. Can't recommend it highly enough. The key is prayerful contemplation of each segment before moving to the next reading....journaling is also helpful and encouraged.

This devotional is different from most I've encountered. Bonhoeffer is thinking aloud here about the nature and character of God and man. I find most of what I have read so far thought provoking at the very least. If you don't agree with what he has to say the text nearly challenges you to a rebuttal. Devotional reading as pablum does not find a home in this setting. I like it for that reason.

These daily devotions culled from Bonhoeffer's writings are just what you need when you've exhausted those by others. The man was a prolific writer - something today's world has difficulty understanding - and when you learn more about the man himself, you are even better able to appreciate his deep devotion to his Lord and Savior. It makes you embarrassed to realize just how much you've been fussing and stressing over your little problems, when you see how this man did all he could to keep his daily walk in step with God even as his country and the world crashed around him, right up to his execution by the Nazis.

Easy to read.

This book of daily readings reflects the depth of Bonhoeffer's thought. I suggest reading through it slowly so that you can plumb the depths and mine the wealth contained here.

Bonhoeffer's insights are wonderful, profound, moving, and inspiring. I gave the Kindle edition three stars because it does not include the day of the month, as the print version does. This is a serious drawback for using it as a daily devotional, not to mention tracking the sources of Bonhoeffer's thoughts, which are indexed by month _and day_. Publisher, please address this serious flaw!

I am reading this day by day but so far it is just what I wanted and is excellent

This book has lead me to go on into a more deep and serious relationship with God. I have not yet finished it, but I'm planing to go on with it until December and re-read it again and again. Bonhoeffer is wordy in his way of thinking but it gets you into a deeper insght of the hidden treasures of scripture. I do recommend, and please go on until the end, do not stop at the begining. It is such a pleasure to be delighed in his readings. The Ebook itself is well organized and divided into chapters, but I just wish it had a day marker so I would know each day of the month I'm into it.
