Irwin Tools/ Record #5- 5" Mechanics Vise T5
These vices were once made in England by Record. Then Irwin bought out Record and closed production in England. Although the packaging doesn't indicate where these are made, it is my understanding that they are made in China. My theory is that although the iron quality may be much lower than the original Record products, the design seems to be largely the same. I got mine for $123 on Amazon with a promo. So far so good, it seems to be heavy duty enough for light household projects. It is actually quite large and weights 53 lbs. Keep in mind that it is a fixed base (no swivel). It is most likely on the high end of quality for a made in China vise and the price is right. I quality american made vice of this size will run $800 - which if you are a professional is probably what you need.

Okay for the price it's at.
Broke my very old No.6 and needed a replacement but was feeling cheap, this little jobby has been in my shed a few years now and it's perfectly okay at the price I paid and still going strong, but the close is not as smooth, nor is the casting quite as good on the whole (if I were to be picky). Wish i'd just spent more on a good second hand engineers vice really!
