Think of it more like a light bulb. It's like a filament that gets really hot and does the hair burning and also damages the follicle to reduce regrowth. Doesn't work for all people. It requires a bit of pain tolerance (use on full), proper use (don't go slow slow you burn yourself) and discipline (don't let too much time in between uses) to get results. Some light bulbs lay for years and others last for a month. Is very high heat so any flaw in the wire could make it break. We got replacements on E.......ba....y. the knock off ones we're actually fairly good and seemed hotter but kept shutting off as "overheating". So that didn't really work out. Wish they did. You'll have to get the nono replacements depending on your model

Yes it needs to recharge. It has a battery life bar that let's you know how much battery is left.
