Beautiful boots but don’t allow for those with a higher instep
Sadly couldn’t try these on due to my higher instep. They are very well made and gorgeous boots but if you have a high instep then beware. Seller is good about processing returns and hopefully will also refund the money soon.

Beautiful boot, better than the pic...Sizing these is according to personal preference!!
I received these in the mail yesterday, and have been fretting about whether or not to send them back. I usually take between a 7 and a 7 1/2. Because I have various foot issues, including metatarsal pain and ball of foot pain and a bunion, not to mention short legs (and short ankles, which is actually the biggest problem I've had in zipping up tall boots; most boots are made assuming the wearer has long & slender ankles to match her long & slender legs!) and muscular calves, I tend to opt for the larger size in boots. In this case, I purchased the 7.5, and they felt a little loose, although I couldn't tell if they were loose enough to opt for a smaller size...Many of the reviews I have read for the frye engineer 12r boot attested to the need to break these in for a long time, difficulty getting feet into the boots (in some cases not being able to get one's foot in at all!) red lines across the tops of feet, pain after wearing for more than small increments of time, blisters, and in the most extreme cases, bruising!! One reviewer said that after trying to "break them in for a year", she had been unsuccessful and they still hurt her feet, and unfortunately, it was way too late to return them.I have foot issues, and do not want to mess around with shoes that hurt my feet, especially since most shoes already hurt my feet anyway!! One podiatry website providing tips for fitting new shoes/boots, states, "During the fitting process, make sure there is enough space (3/8" to 1/2") for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up" and "Don't buy shoes that feel too tight and expect them to stretch to fit."I even went to my city's resident cobbler and spoke with him today to see what his opinion was. He said if I had bunions, that I should keep the larger size and get an insole. I immediately left and went to the pharmacy across the street and bought some massaging gel inserts for the footbeds of these boots. The boots now fit like a dream. Whatever extra space there was, the insole fits it perfectly. My toes have adequate wiggle room and space to spread out over the course of the day. And, I'm not trying to cause myself crippling pain by shoving my foot into a boot that is potentially too small. I'm also giving my poor tired feet, which sustain all of the weight of my body every day (I walk and bike everywhere!), some loving care. Also, these boots are much better in person than the picture. In the picture they look very high-gloss and the brush-off is really high contrast, but each of those things are much subtler in person.I'm already dreaming up new outfits to go with my lovely new boots...

Everything I'd hoped for!
Like many Frye fans, I've wanted a pair of Frye boots for a LONG time, but the price always kept me waiting longer. I live in Ontario Canada, and there just aren't that many retailers near me that have these, or have them for a price I would consider paying. Amazon had these boots on sale for a crazy good price and I jumped at it. I paid more for my Ariat Fatbaby boots than this last Fall! No kidding, the day after I bought them they went back to more than double the price again. Before the expected delivery date, they came in a Frye box/tag/packaging etc. in pristine condition. These boots are made of beautiful thick black leather. Having not tried these on anywhere in-store first, I agonized over the size for 2 reasons. 1- I have freakishly large calves currently at 17.5" at the widest point which prevents me from wearing most taller boot styles. 2- I hoped they would accommodate a slim orthotic. Success on both counts! I wear a size 10 womens medium in pretty much all footwear, and so ordered a 10. These boots were true to length and width. These 12Rs stop just as my calf muscle starts to broaden so we're good! There is nothing worse than a too-tight boot shaft causing a bunch up at the ankles. Currently I am wearing bootcut jeans with these, but after I drop a few more pounds and feel comfortable in a skinny jean, I imagine there will be enough room in the shaft to accommodate those tucked in.I had no "drama" like many other reviewers getting these lovelies on, perhaps because I have a slim, near-flat foot. Wearing a casual weight sock (not thin or heavy but in between) I landed in them with a solid, satisfying thunk and it was foot NIRVANA from then on. I wore er clunked around the house in them for the evening, then decided they might be roomy just enough to try a lighter sock and a slim orthotic (more like an insole with a bit of an arch support). Perfection! My regular orthotics will definitely not fit in this boot with my foot as well at this point but perhaps after they break in/stretch a bit! So I'd say true to size or a bit roomy. Thank goodness I can wear jeans/boots to work because quite honestly I don't want to take these off. The Engineer 12Rs are definite motivation to get to the gym to shrink my calves a few more inches so I can get them in to my next wish list pair of Fryes, the 12R Harness.Go buy these boots. If you are at all thinking of this style, you will not regret it.These are definitely keepers!

Love them for the price, they were used.
I’m usually a 7 size but I decided to half a size up just in case.I received the 7.5 boots. They were used. One of the boots had a used insole. The right boot looked more worn than the left.I thought about returning them but you can’t really get Frye boots for this kind of a deal.

Unable to get foot in the boot
High arches beware. They look amazing, excellent leather but unable to get my foot in the boot.

GREAT BOOTS - with one issue though...
*** Updated Review Below... I love these boots! Amazing quality and craftsmanship. Size wise, I am a true size 8 with regular width feet but had to order an 8.5 on these after trying on an 8R that were way too tight and small, the 8.5 fit perfectly! Only complaint is that the black dye seems to be rubbing off or transferring a bit, hopefully that will stop at some point.Update: SADLY, I had to downgrade my rating from 5 to 3 stars. I still love these boots BUT I need to figure out how to stop the dye from rubbing off onto my clothing, it's getting extreme and I am becoming increasingly unhappy especially with how much they cost. Am going to look into whether or not I can get some help with this because it is past the return by date:(

Super wide looking
They are really nice boots, very comfy and the lining is cosy. However, my feet are generally a size 7, but the best fit are a 41 (nearer a size 8). The only problem there is that they look like boats! The lining makes them much much wider than the non lined version, this might be fine if you have smaller feet, but up at this size they just look a bit ridiculous. I'm going with the unlined version and some really good socks!

Very sore fit
It was very hard getting both boots on but, once on, the right boot was snug yet comfortable. The left was agonising and I had to remove it mid-meal in a restaurant and wear a spare pair of slip-ons my friend had with her (thankfully)! This is the second pair of Frye boots I have had this problem with. I bought a pair of Veronicas many years ago, soon after a pair of Campus boots that I absolutely love for their comfort and the wonderful quality of leather that is softened over the long time (and wear) I've had them. I guess I should stick to the Campus style! Or not buy any more Fryes :(
