I was looking for a girly mad hatter costume with a dash of awesome without being either the Disney animated version or the Johnny Depp version. I also didn't want to be a "sexy" mad hatter, so I was looking for something less showy. That being said, the picture of the costume, while being accurate in its appearance, it is difficult to tell what it is made out of. So... lets start with the hat. The hat is made of a short fuzzy material, like cheap velvet. The material itself which is also used on the jacket and spats looks good, surprisingly good. The hat unfortunately is packaged flattened, and when I popped it out the material was wrinkled, really wrinkled. I blame the foamy inside that makes the hat stand up. I don't think I can iron it, but I am thinking about stuffing it with paper to straighten it out. The Jacket and the blue green vest are a one piece. They button separately. The vest is a pretty bright blue polyester with swirls printed on the fabric in lime green. The yellow necktie is also polyester and I was surprised at how bright it is. There are green teapots and teacups printed on the necktie. Even though the colors are brighter than I had expected they look good together. The skirt is also a thin polyester printed to look like a respectable tweed. The really great thing about it is that it is not shiny. I always think the shiny polyester makes costumes look cheap, so I am very happy that it isn't shiny. The hot pink petty coat that is attached to the skirt creates the illusion of layers of fluffy ruffles. It is only one layer, but the way they sewed it makes it look fuller. The little fingerless gloves are made of the same material as the skirt and trimmed in hot pink ruffles. The spats are a little snug on my legs, but the part that covers the shoe is a little loose. which I guess is good depending on the shoe you choose. I think I'm going to add some elastic to the bottom to keep it attached to my shoes. It would be embarrassing to have the spats flapping around as I walk.While I shared my concerns about this costume, keep in mind that it is an inexpensive costume. And I expected to get this kind of material when I paid for it. I would even say that it is better than most costumes in this price range. It is a complete costume as it has several pieces to it that make you look the part from head to toe... literally. I do love how this costume looks in real life. It does look like the picture. The only thing that disappointed me was the crumpled hat. Overall it is an adorable costume.
