Q: Is the surface of these coasters smooth, or rough like natural sandstone?

I have never touched natural sandstone, however, the surface is rough.

Q: How many sets come in a package?

You get four coasters in a set. It doesn't come with a holder. That must be purchased separately. I love my coasters. They are a nice piece of artwork and can, to an in-artistic eye, look messy. I bought mine two years ago and still use them.

Q: Do they fit in a car cup holder? I've seen others advertised as car coasters but I'm in love with this design

I think they are too big for a car cup holder. They are very nice, love them on my coffee table.
