Q: How do the lights work are they battery operated Fluorescent orange reflective and how long should they last?

They are powered by the wheels spinning. They are multi colored, not orange. Not sure how long they will last, but I assume a long time. Pretty sure they are LED lights.

Q: What size to order for a two and a half year old boy with a size 8 shoe?

My son is 6 years old and wears a size 1Y. I got him a small and was tight but I had forgot it does extend so when I did that it fit much better.

My child is 8 years old and I bought a medium sized. I think it can fit your son because it is adjustable size, if it is too big then just wait a few years for him to grow
