The grid side is rough to the touch but not a problem. The paper does have an odor but very earthy, not a chemical odor.You have to find your preferred combination of brush, brush size, paper, grid size, and ink to make practice pleasant. The price was the same for larger and smaller sheets of paper. If you buy the larger sheets of paper you could have a lot of practice for one pack of paper. When you look at it that way it is not so expensive. If you want really inexpensive ungridded paper, buy painters masking paper. It's just brown craft paper sold in a roll. But this grid paper works for some of my brushes quite nicely.

Paper will go wrinkled after the ink dry out. Some holes on paper due to the thinnesses use of the paper.
