Q: is it really designed to have to stop, tilt up, to take in air, so that it can keep pouring? or am i missing something?

It does not have any kind of vent...but seems to still pour fairly well. Works for me!

Q: can you add a hose to the spickot?

Yes you can I just submitted a review with a photo that shows how I used it as a dish detergent container feeding our kitchen sink hand pump soap dispenser , works great!

Q: Would these work to store honey before I use the valve to fill cans?

This is not the best container for honey.
