Q: What is the height of just the legs?

Q: My fireplace is 30 inches across the back, 21 inches deep and 36 inches across the front. What size should I use?

I'm not sure about size other than anything 30 inches or shorter will work. I would NOT by this brand if you are going to actually light a fire. The metal melted and warped after the first few uses. There is a large hole in the bottom now. Not sure what kind of metal they use but it does not stand up to the heat of oak firewood.

Q: can you use coals in this or would they fall through

Aloha Annie, I thought the slots are 1/2 inch apart but after measuring it I found out they are just 3/8 inch. Whether you use briquettes or chunks neither one will NOT fall through. It looks like this item was indeed made for coal but it also works great for firewood. I sure hope this helps.
