I bought this for my husband but my 8yr old loves it too. She "tends" it with her legos lol.It comes with easy to follow directions. Just plant, set the timer to "seedlings" and it pretty much does the rest. I just make sure it has water, and every time it gets to about a half tank, when I add water in, I add the plant food that came with it. Adjust the timer and distance of the light as they grow. Make sure you feed it the plant food regularly as per directed, and you'll have fresh herbs and salad in no time!We now have full pots of jalapeño, basil, sage, etc. all started in this planter.It's quiet and doesn't take up much space at all. It makes a gentle "waterfall" sound once the tank gets about at half full, but just fill it again and it's practically silent, if that's what you prefer.All in all, I really can't think of any cons. I don't know how realistic it would be to grow things to the stage where they bear fruit, like jalapeños or strawberries, seems like they'd get too big. But we've planted tiny spoon tomatoes, so maybe I'll update with pics later if it works.

Once everything is set up and the nutrient solution is properly balanced, the system practically runs itself. I am very pleased with the Large Tank Hydroponics Growing System. I did a lot of research and, as a result, purchased two different brands and made one of my own using a medium sized plastic storage box. Based on the research I also installed an aquarium type air bubbler inside each tank. I used a nice 4 arm grow-light for my homemade unit. I was pleasantly surprised with my growing results. I planted tomato seeds in each planter. The Large Tank Hydroponics Growing System outperformed the other two. The only drawback (a good one) was how high I could extend the built-in lights. My plants grew so well I had to add a 3-foot-high trellis to support them. They towered over the lamps. The other commercial unit and my fabricated system did fine but didn’t do nearly as well. In all I had fun, had made a great purchase and have lots of cherry tomatoes.

Very easy to assemble and set up.The light settings can be easily adjusted and set to automatically turn on at a chosen time. Intensity of light can also be adjusted as needed.The pump has no such settings, seems to turn on every 15 minutes or so. Only has on/off control. As long as you keep the reservoir mostly full of the nutrient water solution the pump is nearly silent. If the reservoir is low the pump does get pretty loud, so be sure to keep it filled.For an all-in-one kit for beginner growers, I am very pleased with this purchase. I have grown cilantro, basil, and parsley successfully using exactly what came with this item on my first use. Doesn't come with seeds, but everything else you need is included. I am now using it again to grow more herbs. It was easy to clean and doesn't take up much space on a table and/or countertop.I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in beginning hydroponic gardening/growing. Very beginner friendly and very satisfying to watch your plants grow.
