Update:  There is a great sale on Holbein Colored Pencils at Plaza Art.  It's on until Oct. 30th 2022.
These are the best prices I have seen around - especially with Holbeins rarely on sale.

can someone please share if these are oil or, rather, wax based pencils? how slick do they sketch and blend? (thank you!)

All colored pencils....ALL COLORED PENCILS, are both wax and oil. The ratio is different in each brand but they all have both! You can't judge pencils by " waxed or oil " you just cant..can't... iam a full time professional artist and I've been using this 150 holbein set as my main set, along with all the other professional artist grade brands and sets. Holbein colored pencils are oil, wax and natural fats. I don't know how this whole thing of asking " are these wax or oil based " but it is rediclous because they all have both. Crafyers tend to ask this question more because they think all " wax based " colored pencils are soft like prismacolor... and all oil based are like polychromos. Derwent are " oil based " and yet softer and creamy... more so than the Luminance that are " waxed based " people also think that all wax pencils have horrible wax bloom like prisma... but they don't if they are of high artist grade quality. Holbein are on the softer side but keep a point well.. they honestly are a perfect mixed...down the middle of polychromos and prismacolor- in feel. If you are a beginner, you will struggle with layering these pencils. If you know what you are doing, they layer and blend like a dream, cover like a dream, and thats why I always have aleast 2 new 150 sets in my studio at all times. I buy mine from Japan because they are half the price of what they are sold for in USA. Have a nice day

The item description says 150 pencils yet some reviewers say they only received 100.  Exactly how many are in this set?

I think that is has been corrected to the full 150 pencil set now. Note I found the full 150 set a little less expensive by one or two vendors on ebay, many have it priced over the top.

Toxicity - is there any marking on the holbein box stating the pencils are certified to the astm d4236 standards for us or en71 standards in europe?

All artist grade, professional art supplies will be slightly toxic. Don't eat or chew on your pencils... wash your hands before you eat... and there is ZERO RISK. I was a chemist for 14 years, turned professional artist and Bookbinder. My favorite colors are cobalt pigments, cadmium pigments... and I've worked with the deadliest chemist in the world for 14 years and iam healthy with no problems. Take titanium white in every brand... it is toxic if you eat enough of it, but you don't eat your art supplies right??? Titanium white is in almost every set of every brand! There ials also the reason of... warning labels that state on every artist grade art supply " NOT INTENDED FOR CHILDREN!" Because professional artist grade supplies are made with high quality artists pigments with top lightfastness. Alot could be a health hazard if you eat or breathe in fine dry dust... these aren't soft pastels and don't release fine dry particles in the air... no hazard. Have a nice day and stop obsessing over things like this if you are gonna use artist grade professional supplies... because they all are a hazard one way or another. Don't use them if you can't get over that fact. Have a lovely day
