My Husband's Lover: An unputdownable psychological thriller with a breathtaking twist

Sigh…don’t waste your time
The writing seemed so similar to another book I recently read but it was a different author; apparently this us the trend in supposed psychological thrillers now. None of these characters are likable. None. Sophie makes the dumbest choices so it was hard to tell whether she is an idiot or has zero intuition & common sense. I think both. I really disliked the author trying to liken Sophie’s being heartbroken & upset over her husband’s affair with chronic illness. It’s bad enough to that able-bodied people downplay what chronically ill people go through by insisting “everyone feels like__at times” …fill in that blank with pain, exhaustion, feeling overwhelmed, you name it. To put in writing more than once that her not knowing who the mistress is (a situation that she put herself in by going on the trip when she could have backed out by the way) is akin to precisely what chronic illness is like is irresponsible, clueless & damaging. Then to have such shallow dialogue & ridiculously unbelievable conversations on top of everything else… sigh. Don’t waste your time & certainly don’t pay for this.

No place for secrets.
Never thought that this plot would be sorted. There is so much going on and so many secrets about each subplot and each person therein. First, there's Sophie who is married with two sons and a part-time job. Next, there is her husband, Ryan, who she has learned is having an affair. Then, there are the other members of Sophie's Swimming Club, Elise, Ariel, Grace, and Fern who bring their own baggage including the desire on the part of one of them to kill Sophie. Now, if that is not enough, the group decides to drive seven hours one way to spend a week in an isolated house beside a loch in Scotland in the winter so they can get up each morning s swim in the frozen eaters of the loch. Put all.of these factors together and you have an engaging story with enough Acton and detail.yo truly amuse you.

Captivating story
Six women decide to spend a week at a remote cottage in Scotland, with no phones, electricity, running water. Its a stretch that modern women would agree to that, but these women are "wild swimmers", plunging into rivers and lakes regardless of temperature. This is an intriguing plot, and the author skillfully integrates the present with the back story. The characters all shine through as individuals. The author is a master of her craft, the descriptions of the landscapes are excellent. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it.

Good read
I enjoyed this book, other than the English/Scottish terms. Five women go on holiday in Scotland to cold swim. They are basically off grid in a beautiful countryside. Sophie calls her cheating husband on one of their breaks before arriving at their secluded cottage. This is where the story takes a really bad turn. Several twists and turns before the end!

Not as good as I had hoped it would be
The book has a twist but it’s kinda not a good one. I don’t know - it has a lot of characters to keep track of and some of them aren’t even relevant to the story. I didn’t even like the main character that much - she shows a lot of righteous indignation and she’s no Angel herself

good
Good book. Became tedious at times but i finished it. Did not seem realistic to me that women would go off for a week with no power, no hot water and swim in icy water. But maybe there are women who would do that.

Good book
I thought this was a good book. It definitely ran a little long with the main character trying to find out who was the trader, but the ending did not disappoint. It wasn’t predictable which I truly appreciated and enjoyed!!

Unique plot
This book has a very novel plot. A women's swimming club go on a trip and all he'll breaks loose. The book is full of twists and turns...maybe too many. I think it went on maybe 2 or 3 chapters too long, but I enjoyed it and never guessed where it was going.

Different but a good read
An unusual story but a good read. You don't find out who the villan is until near the end. Not like anything I have read before but did enjoy it.

Disappointing
The premise of My Husband's Lover was good, the setting was very well done and the book had a lot of potential for some great suspense. But the plot meandered around without much direction after the first half and the momentum started to wane, along with my interest in the story. The characters were fleshed out and believable, the prose for the most part was very good, and nothing happened that made me suspend my disbelief, but events which could have led somewhere juicy and built tension were resolved too quickly and without much impact. I'd call this more of a domestic drama, as the pacing slowed right down and sputtered to a stop, and the characters which at first held menace, were just limp and pathetic by the end, which made the climax a big disappointment. The book ended and I felt nothing. The author clearly has talent and I believe her future works could be outstanding, but the main thing I'm going to remember about this story is the wasted potential.3*
