Full-features, stable and versatile. As competitor leap forward in perf, Zyxel USG starts feeling expensive.
This is a feature-rich, stable and well designed router. The Policy Route security feature is very versatile. For most configuration, it allows you to define groups for service, ip, zone etc making it easy to defined otherwise complex security policy. It got really fine grain control on all aspects. I owned it for about 3 years and have a moderately complex SOHO setup and have yet found a scenario that is not supported.Since I upgraded to 1Gbps fiber internet, I observed it I wasn't able to reach the advertised speed of the router. LAN to WAN peaked at around 350 - 400Mbps (speednet or fast.com).Contracted Zyxel via email for the perf limit and other issues on other hardware multiple times, they had always been helpful. On the other hand, the bandwidth was a limit on hardware itself. My understanding is that Cisco's RV32x, RV34x series and Ubiquiti EdgeRouter are able to perform close to 1Gbps at a *much* lower price point. As competitor leap forward in perf, Zyxel USG60w starts feeling expensive.I would like to stay with Zxyel if there is another reasonably-priced option that can go to 1Gbps real-life performance. However, after some research, even USG110 won't do it. I feel that Zxyel should really up the game.

Epic piece of hardware!
After reading other reviews I will first note that I purchased the USG60w-np which is the 60mbps version without the antivirus package. After reading the reviews it seems most people that have bandwidth issues have the usg20 or usg40 and are using or were using the antivirus options. I have installed/set up dozens of routers/gateways over the years, and this is quite honestly the only one I have EVER been impressed with - especially for a small to medium sized business. This is a serious network appliance- definitely scalable and can be used with or without built in antivirus and malware protection (that you would pay an additional fee for, and I don't personally use). That being said setup isn't for the novice, but their customer service is decent, and they will help you set it up which I would recommend for anyone that doesn't do this regularly. I set mine up without help, but most people could not. The GUI for this is amazing, well laid out and easy to navigate. It can be set up with an internal wireless network for your employees as well as a completely separate public WiFi hotspot all within the same appliance. It will also automatically setup any ZyXel access points you add to the system. Be mindful that with only 4 ports you will most likely need some gigabit switches to accommodate all your connections as well. I think that if you get the ZyXel switches they can be configured automatically as well, but I use Netgear switches so I'm not sure on that. This little machine blows away anything made by Cisco, Netgear, or Linksys for a small business -it is a little pricier than their small business hardware, but after having used it, there is a definite reason why.

NOT for gigabit WAN throughput
I purchased the USG60W believing 1Gb throughput for Fios - NOPE.Liked: Good interface and firewall, good overall solid appliance.Disliked: Not good if you are looking for super speed. Processor can not handle Gb speed and I confirmed this with Zyxel support.Shame on them for the deceptive marketing. MAX speed you can expect is directly connected is +/- 250 Mbps on the USG60W.

Don't believe the bad reviews - great range of security appliances!
I am a consultant working with large (Fortune 100 mostly) enterprises to define and execute network transformation strategies. Of course, none of them use ZyXEL. However, in my personal time, I help a couple of friends' small businesses and some not-for-profit organizations ensure they have bulletproof networks. So far I have 4 various ZyXEL USG appliances deployed and in the case of those networks, I know I never have to worry about them. Don't believe the bad reviews. Yes, ZyXEL's interface was difficult to learn at first, however, within a short time I became very adept at navigating and configuring it. I have successfully used VLANS, IPSec VPNs, SSL VPNs, and the WLAN controller in these devices. When properly sized, they are very fast and reliable. I love the automatic firmware updates and keep that turned on to ensure continued reliability and security. Also, for one organization, a school, they are using the Content Filter with SSL inspection on a pair of USG310's to keep the kids safe and to ensure the teachers don't go off track or off task. These devices are a little tricky to learn but it's well worth it and for the money, I don't know if you can do better. I will continue to recommend, buy, and deploy ZyXEL anytime I encounter someone who asks for my help with a flaky network or is building new and wants to do it right the first time.

It was great until licenses expire!
This product was fantastic, but beware, as soon as the licenses expire ... my bandwidth was cut from 70 Mbps down to 7 Mbps. No explanation, no setting to adjust. I assume this is to get me to continue to purchase licenses for products I don't use. Not a good business solution AT ALL!!! It is a shame really, a nice little small business firewall with a nice set of features. Throwing it away ...

Great piece of equipment
This is definitely a 'business-use' router and I am using it primarily for household applications. It does require some research to get set up (as mentioned in other reviews). I'm not a professional IT user but my knowledge level is probably slightly above average.I've been thoroughly impressed with the wide array of options and the robust capabilities. The software interface is easy to navigate. If you want something more than a basic router and are looking for something to manage a more complex network architecture (VPNs, etc.) then the ZyXEL has my full endorsement.

Love these ZyXEL USG firewalls.
Definitely not for the timid. You really need to know what you are doing to configure this, and to take advantage of all it has to offer. Definitely a great value for the money. Professional quality device. Performs great, has dual radios, and can control multiple (supported) wireless access points from this device. Fantastic throughput even over IPSEC VPN. Great list of security features. My only wish is that the USG40W model had dual radios as well. It only has a 2.4GHz radio.
