Ridley: Series 1 [DVD]

The acting was great , the storyline was great

I was disappointed with this series. The plot lines aren't that intelligent & all of the episodes end with 'a song'. Very strange. I have enjoyed other series starring Adrian Dunbar, but sadly not this one. I won't bother to watch any further series.

Ridley is perhaps the result of a quest to reach beyond the known boundaries of the Procedural Universe.However, we do have the bereft investigator component. We also have the recently retired-but-still-the-best component. We have a segmented backstory that plays out and finally sums the preceding bereft / retired scenario component. We have the take-your-mind-off-the-tragedy-by-fixing-something component. We even have the now traditional new-girlfriend-must-die-or-be-placed-out-of-reach component, pioneered and perfected by the American TeeVee series "Bonanza" ( each time dad or one of the brothers fell in love the woman / girl would -- tragically -- be dead before the episode ended, thus preserving the all-male, sexless, motherless vibe ).So, the only glimpse of a new Galaxy within the known Procedural Universe is the somewhat stuck-on aspect of a decidedly non-Dennis Potter Singing Detective** / Jazz Club owner, which this viewer found painful, dreary, and, with the imaginary duet closing the "can I heal and embrace this beautiful and new love?" episode, reaching a level of nauseating cliché. The rest? A case of having all the right parts but no genuine sense of a whole.* Had also considered "WILL NO-ONE RIDLEY OF THESE TEDIOUS PLOTS" but decided to go with the Little Britain reference instead.** To the writers credit "The Singing Detective" is briefly alluded.

Enjoyable crime series 1 - hope there will be more. Great actors.

Really good series. Fingers crossed for a second series. Binge watched it, could not stop watching. Delivered on time and well packed.

I'm amazed at the high ratings of others for this durge. Worn out plots, worn out lead actor, tick-box politically correct sub-plots running throughout ... A waste of tin/plastic (or whatever DVDs are made of), and a total waste of time watching it...

I FOUND THE SERIES ENJOYABLE AND THE ACTING GOOD, BUT I MUST SAY THAT THE SERIES BEARS A STRONG RESEMBLANCE TO OTHER SIMILAR PROGRAMMES (EVEN A SLIGHT RESEMBLANCE TO MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE "BOSCH"), SINCE THE LEAD CHARACTER IS A VERY GOOD POLICE INSPECTOR (THE BEST AT WHAT HE DOES WE ARE TOLD), WHO RETIRES AFTER HIS FAMILY (WIFE AND DAUGHTER) DIE IN A FIRE, BUT IS ASKED TO START HELPING HIS FORMER COLLEAGUES AGAIN IN A CONSULTING CAPACITY.
