Painted
We used this for a pirate themed birthday. We painted the foam with craft paint and brushed it on thick, it took a lot of paint but my husband thought spray paint would disintegrate it so we didn’t try. We used paint stir sticks, painted those and shoved them into the foam sides and those were attached with some super glue. The foam was a great size and we had no debris falling off, it stayed as one piece to make things mess free.
