Very pleased with this book.
As someone who is self taught I learned a lot from this book. In fact I'm nowhere near good enough to put the more advanced stuff to use. This book really does seem to cover an awful lot. I also love the CD, which provides a good selection of tunes to play along to. In my opinion even by themselves this book or the CD would be worth the price that you get both for.

Boring format
A lot of detail but not enough pictures.

Tutti Flutey
There really is no substitute for a good teacher when learning a musical instrument, but, if like me your preferred learning method is to have a printed set of instructions that you can read at your own pace to supplement the lessons, then this is a good place to start. I chose this book after "looking inside" at the section on how to locate the embouchure and make the flute sound and got a noise out of my previously mute flute first time! I tend to find the Dummies books rather irritatingly chatty, like having someone telling jokes in your ear while you're trying to concentrate, but Karen Evans Moratz clearly has a lifetime's knowledge and experience which she conveys in a clear, readable discursive style, salted with witty asides and comments which support rather than disrupt the flow of the information she is imparting. I have found the book a really useful adjunct to my lessons and a pleasure to read. My copy is now starting to look distinctly well loved and I would certainly recommend it to a friend.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Two weeks ago I had never played the flute before - now I am already playing simple tunes and I am beginning to develop some understanding of the complexity and beauty of the flute.I would recommend this book which is written for adult learners. The style is is easy to understand, fairly lighthearted and yet very detailed and informative. Buying this before you buy a flute would be helpful. The CD is a lot of help too - at least you can hear how it SHOULD sound - even if you can't do it quite yet!!In addition to information about the actual playing techniques and musical notation, there is a lot of background information, recommendations for books and recordings, information about how to maintain the flute and about different types of flute. There is also a section on much more advanced techniques - which I hope to achieve some day - so the book would be great for someone who can already play but is maybe a bit rusty or looking to make further advances.A lot of info - straightforward, detailed and not patronising - the author assumes you will achieve!

Fantastic book!
As an adult beginner, I was looking for a book that wasn't written for children. This is really surpassed my expectations - filled with information, tips and tricks, but also entertaining with the occasional joke. The CD is great too (I transfered the audio files to my phone since it's 2020 and I don't have a CD player standing around anymore). I would recommend using this book on a music stand with those little metal "arms" to keep the book open since it's fairly thick.
