Septuagint with Apocrypha

Fantastic book. It has really helped me with Greek. The influence the Septuagint had on the Greek used in the New Testament means that this is essential for anyone trying to understand the New Testament in Greek. In fact the Greek of the Septuagint was probably used as the basis for the Greek of the New Testament - based on the similar style and wording. Reading the Septuagint can therefore shed light on the meaning of certain New Testament verses.For example the Greek word for lord "kyrios" is used in the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew name for God. The connotations of this word having something to do with a deity don't exist in Classical Greek. Therefore when a Greek student finds Jesus being referred to as "kyrios" in the New Testament, the implication that he is divine could be missed by someone not familiar with the Septuagint and its use of the Greek language. In fact the word "kyrios" is almost only used in the NT only when referring to Jesus or God. Another example would of course be the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus. The word used for these brothers of his in the New Testament is "adelphoi" which in the singular is "adelphos". In the Septuagint we find that Abraham's nephew is called his "adelphos" and other similar examples goes to show that the early church belief that these "brothers" were actually just kinsmen (not siblings) is backed up by this.We also know that the majority of Old Testament quotes in the New Testament are taken from the Septuagint. We also have older copies of Septuagint manuscripts than we have of the Hebrew Masoretic text which means that it is invaluable for the study of early Christianity.The reason I gave the book four and not five stars is because in a minority of places some letters don't seem to have printed properly. Instances of this are rare and rarely affected my ability to read the text though. The font could also have been slightly larger but I suppose that is the price of having both the Greek and English text included!

you get the 300 bc translation of the tanak jewish bible along with some apocra books maccabies. you see the old greek the language of the day from alexanders empire in the holy land with the english translation. most of our bibles come from this, well im no expert ,there are loads of professors out there who know best. Nothing special here except for the guys who like to do a bit of cross ref work to try get stuff a bit clearer i suppose you could say.One thing that I would say a lot of people go on about the appocrapha yes its good to see what was going on during that era but remember god had stopped talking to his people so I think most people should realise that this is not gods word if that makes sense. So many people tend to go on about the lost books of the bible etc. Im talking about what is the cannon if that makes sense. Generally a book for the brainy boys.

Long before the New Kings James Version, in fact, long before ANY latter day translation, we had the Septuagint. The original account of the OT that both Jesus & the disciples read from as every layman could understand original greek, whereas only the elect could totally understand Hebrew. This book is good for one thing....it includes scripture that has long been removed from every modern translation, yes, that includes the NKJ version & every other version we have today. There are books that have long been removed for various reasons that are included here, many of which hold very important teachings that are helpful to understanding, say, books like Revelation. Here you have all the original wordings as they were intended to be read. A nice touch is the original Greek version is also included on each page.If you like Holy books & are interested in the REAL version of God's word before Christ's birth, without removals of passages & full books omitted, the I can't recommend this book enough.

Excellent and clear text. For anyone who is used, as I am, to reading the Greek New Testament this will not be difficult to wade through. Around 90% of NT Greek is in here also, plus other words which a good lexicon (like Taylor's) will help you find easily. Its not scripture as I understand it. The LXX adds and subtracts words and phrases, and takes some odd slants occasionally; more a Jewish commentary (like a modern English Bible translation wrt the Greek/Hebrew originals.) Excellent to have two columns of Greek and English side by side. The English is quite literal and readable, but suffers from some out-of-date terms and words, so do get a Lexicon to go with this.

Am happy with it just remember that it doesn't contain the renewed covenant

It was an excellent value price for what is, I suppose, a somewhat specialised item. The volume is quite handsomely bound (and rather a heavy weight for travelling with!). The print, in particular the English, is often rather blurred (no doubt some radical economising was involved).Now I'm looking for a parallel texts version of the Old Testament (so-called), with Hebrew, Greek and Latin. I suspect that will not come cheaply, but would be more convenient than juggling separate books.

A very important book for anyone interested in the history of Judaism and Christianity. More than just a Greek translation of the Hebrew original, it was this version, rather than the Hebrew, on which the evangelists principally relied when putting the story of Jesus into its historical/religious context. The English translation, while accurate, is not modern - although written in the 19th Century, it has the flavour of King James rather than Queen Victoria. If you are comfortable with Greek, you'll easily write a better translation yourself. At this price, the book is terrific value.

A very helpful tool for studying Biblical history. My only criticism is that I would have preferred for the entire text to have been in English without the ancient Greek text. Thus 4 Star Rating instead of 5.
