For People Interested In Data
This is a reference book for people interested in Italian Order of Battle data. This book does not count guns, or bullets, or tanks, but it does show the evolution of Italian division components and structures during the war. Want to know how the division elements of a specific division evolved during the war? This book can probably answer that question. You will find little discussion of battles or major campaigns in this book; it is not that type of history book. As I said it is a reference volume, but that is why I purchased it and look forward to having in my personal library.

Book
Good book on all the Italian formation for start to finish. Best portion of book is the small but less know formation made up of local fighting units in East Africa. Worth the read if you are wanting to know about Italian army formations in WW2

Useful Order of Battle at the Divisional level
While the book presents a minimum of narrative history for units, the Division's and most of their major sub-units are inventoried for an army not well covered elsewhere. Unit movement dates are generally listed but are not complete as the author explains. A good reference work.

An indispensable work
Based on the diari storici (war diaries) of the Regio Esercito's units, Mussolini's Army at War provides to the English readership a complete description and a brief operational history of all units involved in the 1940-43 campaigns. Accurate and easy to use, the work will become the standard quick reference guide to the Italian army for the period. Only one thing missing: a chronological index. An indispensable tool for anyone interested in the history of the Italian army in the Second World War.

Excellent reference work
This indispensable book fills an important gap in information on the Italian army with complete details of all units and commanders down to divisional level. It will undoubtedly be the standard reference. One minor fault is the omission of some of the more ad hoc formations but this is perhaps asking too much!
