The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe (Rp Minis)

Great book - very visual and not at all stuffy old school. I bought it for a 9 year old interested in science, who has only been introduced to the periodic table through mine craft. He has started to ask questions about elements and what they are. Wanted to show him that the REAL elements are different and not like the mine craft ones. He is particularly interested in radioactive substances, this book was ideal in explaining what uranium was to satisfy his curiosity. It's a great book to dip in and out of, I wouldn't expect him to read it cover to cover, (although it is under his pillow). There is a double page colourful spread for each element, and the text is very readable. It is ordered in a way sympathetic to the periodic table. I love that practical everyday objects are used to illustrate what the elements are and how we use them in everyday life. Takes you up to secondary level science concepts, but in a way younger children may find interesting. He likes to categorise, order and group things, so this is right up his street. Found it when searching for a periodic table poster on line. Would quite like to get the cards that go with the book, and the poster. Also the book about molecules from the same series. I do think that when kids ask questions about a topic it's fine to give them text that takes them beyond what they may be doing at school. Hopefully it will make chemistry look interesting rather than scary, by the time he reaches secondary school.

Good educational Book fantastic quality

If this book had been available ‘way back in the day when I was in secondary school, I would have gone into the field of chemistry.But it’s just as useful to me in my current profession as a science fiction writer. It’s full of things I used to know and things I need to know.As for anyone else: if the words ‘Periodic Table of Elements’ make your eyes glaze over, try this book. Go straight to ‘Hydrogen’ and start reading (you can check out the introductory material later for backstory).. By the time you get to ‘Boron’ you’ll be hooked—and not just because the photos are great.(Seriously, though: give kids science books like this one and let them *enjoy* learning.)

The best way to sum up this book is element porn! A visual guide to all of the 118 known elements (ok some aren't visual) with information and pictures of what the elements look like and can be used for. Also has information on the atomic structure of each element. Written in an entertaining style (the author describes the alkali metals as "fun to throw into lakes!) and is full of great facts such as how gallium can be turned from a solid to a liquid if you hold it in your hands of a short while. Like a lovely metal piece of chocolate! Read this book so you can answer one of my favourite questions to ask - "What's your favourite element?!" Mine is probably Astatine (85) mainly for the sole fact of its short half-life means that around an ounce of it is present in the entire earth at once and it decays so quickly that it's never the same ounce day to day

This is a beautiful, engaging and informative book. This review focuses on the experience of reading the Kindle version. I'm reading 'Elements' on my compact phone's Kindle app. Despite my use of a small screen, the images are clean and beautiful, easily zoomed to look at almost all the info in detail. The book certainly benefits from a colour screen - colour coding and representations of actual colours in nature are an integral part of the element descriptions.Kindle (app) downsides:-The author describes how the pages of the physical book can be slightly fanned so that the page edges show trends in melting and boiling points, but there is no Kindle equivalent.-The scales for electron orbital filling are divided into small gradations with small labels. These, and the long, thin colour signature charts, are difficult for me to zoom enough to read well: I simultaneously need to zoom in more to read the detail and zoom out more to get an overview of the chart contents.- This is a great book to dip in to, or to read in a different order in the one laid out. The bookmark and sync-to-furthest-read options on Kindle don't really help with keeping track with this type of reading, and flicking through to browse is relatively slow with large images to load for each element.- If your device has little storage space, now might not be the time to download this book.I recommend this book for anyone with any interest in chemistry, no matter what level of existing knowledge. Do consider if you'd be better with a hard copy.

Exellent illustrations and information on the author

This book has been great to get my 7 year old son interested in the elements, although some of the science is too advanced it is an awesome tool for me to use and adapt into more child friendly terminology. He loves the pictures and it won't be long before he can truly appreciate the book for its full worth. Buy this for your older children and let them investigate it all themselves or buy it for your younger children and spend a little time together brushing up your own knowledge (unless you're a physicist already) and advancing their education at a younger age.

Love chemistry and this book it always on my coffee table. Read a page regularly, the information is interesting and is accompanied by beautiful photographs. Love the features in the margins too.

Beautiful book and explain some properties of elements that we don’t see easily.

Very nice book with amazing pictures, bought the whole series

Excellent, sehr zufrieden

Pros: children loved it.Cons: this is not the book if you need a ton of information on each element.You will find other elements books with more information on the elements. But this one has more attractive pictures, and the author knows how to tell the tale of elements.It is for children.

Perfect book to get kids curious about learning!
