Q: How do the birds initially grab the underneath wire holding in the suet? It seems impossible to fly to this feeder and somehow attach to the bottom.

There is a wire material that they grab on the bottom. The woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees have no problem with the upside down maneuver. They manage it quite easily. The blue jays can mange but don't seems to be able to hang on for long. The grackles and starlings have a difficult time with this feeder which is why I got it. My former upright suet feeders would be cleaned out by the starlings in an afternoon; I only fill the upside down about once a week.

Squirrel Buster Classic Squirrel-proof Bird Feeder w/4 Feeding Ports, 2.4-pound Seed Capacity might work. It certainly stops squirrels. It works on weight but if a bully bird isn't heavy it won't stop them.
