Probably not cause you would have to get way to close for comfort to use it.

It does not collapse or fold like an entrenching tool. It is one solid piece. It has a very sturdy sheath that holds it very well. The sheath holds this tool very firmly so, while it will not fall out or move around, do not expect a quick draw if you are thinking of this as a defensive device. It is a great all around tool that takes and holds an edge extremely well. Maybe too well. I keep mine almost razor sharp and I have to be VERY careful not to touch any of the sharpened edges. A simple touch results in an open gash. The M48 does not have to be this sharp though. It is just my preference to make and keep it that way.
