Musical adaptation of the famous fairytale in which young Cinderella (Gemma Craven) lives a life of misery with her wicked stepmother (Margaret Lockwood) and two stepsisters. When a great ball is organised in honour of the Prince (Richard Chamberlain), the forlorn Cinderella dreams of attending only to have her wish granted by her Fairy Godmother (Annette Crosbie). At the ball the Prince meets and is smitten by Cinderella, but the path of true love does not run straight...

Simply Magical!
I watched this movie as a child and it made quite an impression at the time. Since then, it has been in the back of my mind for decades, calling me to watch it again, for it is one of the most beautiful, romantic and magical movies created ever! This movie is an absolute treat and delight to watch. The casting is perfect and each actor and acrtess gives a stunning and convincing performance. The sets, outdoor landscapes and costumes are straight out of a fantasy novel dream. And the songs are warm, funny, heartfelt and moving. The world is a better place with this movie in it.

The Slipper and the Rose is a little gem of a film
I really loved this little gem of a film version of the story of Cinderella. The Slipper and the Rose (directed in the UK in 1976 by Bryan Forbes and produced by Stuart Lyons) has lots of things in it, from songs, dance, humor, drama and also wonderful costumes and sceneries.Actress Gemma Craven, a real life Cinderella due to how she got the role (check the Special Feature, as to explain why) is a perfect portrayal. Actor Richard Chamberlain provides both excellent acting and singing abilities, as the dashing Prince Edward. He has a lot of screen time, about the same as Gemma.(Spoiler Alert!) Showing so much story structure of his decision of whom to marry, against his father's choice. The Prince wants marriage for 'Love', whereas his father wants his son to marry in order to avoid War by joining alliance and build a bigger Kingdom. This creates a fair balance of the story between both the prince's and Cinderella's . Also naturally of their time together. There are many fantastic supporting actors, many that are familiar. From Kenneth More, Annette Crosbie and Margaret Lockwood, just to name a few. The songs (by Richard M. Sherman) ranges from good old fashion musical numbers to some wonderful sweet heartfelt songs (particularly Gemma's 'Tell Him')The DVD has on its Menu, Play movie and Scene Selections. Also Special Features, which shows the early production of the film. What are to be seen as well, are the creation of the lavish sets and the casting choice for the Cinderella character. Narrated by Sir David Frost (Executive Producer).I have enjoyed The Slipper and the Rose very much and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes good old fashion romantic musicals.

Simply Delightful
A musical version of the story of Cinderella. A wonderful ensemble cast. Worth a watch for the superb Michael Hordern alone. The musical score is sumptuous even if the costumes have not dated well (clear 70's vibe)Watched this as a child many, many moons ago and still love it now. If you love a good musical with some solid performances and could do with a little escapism. I highly recommend ''The Slipper and the Rose''

A childhood favourite now looks fantastic.
I watched this a few times on TV as a kid, and despite being a long musical, I always enjoyed it, from the endearing characters who often made me laugh, to the acting, some really fun songs, and its overall uniqueness, this movie doesn't get boring to me. The Prince isn't a typical pretty boy, he actually has personality and has his own will, not even wanting to get married. This whole film is very fun and entertaining, Hollywood don't make them like this anymore. It also looks fantastic on blu-ray, I've been used to an average version on DVD, which looked like they had just put the VHS version on it, this blu-ray remaster gives the film new life, it's very clear and sharp and colours pop off the screen, this is a blu-ray master done right.

Finally, in Cinemascope and HD !
I cannot thank Second Sight enough for their restoration of one of my all time favourite films. To see this magnificent musical get the dusting it so fully deserved is pure joy. What a gift ! Shot to a picture ratio of 2:35 in 1976, this film has been only available so far in pan and scan, which means that the picture had been chopped and re-framed to fit our old 4/3 square TV screens. Thank heavens someone had the idea to allow us to finally see it the way the director of photography had intended us to, meaning that we can at last see the WHOLE picture. And what a picture it is ; sharp and steady, crystal-clear images, with brilliant colours to boot. The sound has been cleared up too. If you're a fan of this wonderful classic like I am, trust me, you need the blu-ray copy, immediately.

Beautiful film
Love this film! I have fond memories of watching it with my mum and I love it to this day. A fantastical, theatrical whirlwind of a romance perfect for a rainy day or when in need of cheering up. I adore the Fairy Godmother too!

Fantastic film
A most enjoyable film to watch. I do not know how I missed this film for so long. Many of the well known character actors turning in performances so unusual for them. British Pantomine at its best.

I'm in the UK and the blu ray edition played fine on my UK blu ray player
I'm reviewing the blu ray edition. To start with, I'm in the UK and the blu ray edition played fine on my UK blu ray player.I saw this when it first came out, and sad to say I haven't seen it since! Saw it was out on blu ray so decided to take the plunge. The picture quality is gorgeous - it shows the location work in Austria off beautifully, and the costumes look stunning. This is a lovely, straight telling of the Cinderella story with all the elements you would expect for the story. There are no big, flashy special effects, but the transformations to get Cinderella to the ball are beautifully done - more by slight of hand and clever editing. The apperance of the dress makes you blink, and the transformation back at the stroke of twelve is simply, but movingly done. The casting is a who's who of British acting, with special mention for Michael Horden, Kenneth More, and Margaret Lockwood. Gemma Craven and Richard Chamberlain are perfect as the lovers, and Annette Crosbie brings a mischievous Fairy Godmother, with more than a hint of Samantha in "Bewitched."
