Divergent [Blu-ray] [2014]

Perfect mix of great acting, a clever script, and atmospheric music
An incredible film. One of my favourite movies of all time, and thus the 5 star rating. There are very few films that I enjoy watching over and over again without tiring of them. Divergent is perhaps the most re-watchable of those. There is something about the story that is captivating, and I think all of us can relate to being divergent. A society where everyone is meant to fit 100% in to a single category is completely artificial. The sound track and musical score play a big part in the movies "re-watch-ability". There is a near perfect match between the music and the action, and it adds an amazing amount of atmosphere. The addictive nature of the music used, and the way it tightly integrates with the action, certainly contributes to my favourable impression of the film. The scene with Tris flying high over the buildings of Chicago, to the music of M83's "I Need You", is probably the most magical and atmospheric moment in the film, and the change to this scene from the book, having it immediately after Tris's success in capturing the flag, is, in my opinion, pure genius.I saw the movie before I read the book. And having done this, I can understand if some fans of the book were disappointed with the movie. There are a lot of changes: the chronological order of scenes shuffled around, dialogues being spoken by a different character, some scenes cut, some scenes changed significantly. I can see why most of these changes were made though. In my opinion, the story has been greatly improved. I'm not really a fan of the book. Having read it, I'm unlikely to read it again, because a lot of the magic of the film is missing from the book. So part of the success of the film is due to the work that the screenwriter has done with the script. Almost all scenes in the movie do have their source in the book, in some form, but it has been cleverly sliced and diced and re-shuffled in to a form that works a lot better, particularly for the big screen. The script is great, but let's not forget the acting. It is a very talented cast. The performances by all actors are genuine and believable. Theo James and Shailene Woodley are brilliant as Four and Tris. It's not just the script that they're working with but also the way they bring that script to life that makes these two characters shine in a way that I had difficultly imagining when reading the book.

An above-average and very satisfying franchise-opener.
I was hugely surprised by Divergent. As someone who has sat through a handful of teen-targeted fiction from the good (The Hunger Games) to the dreadful (Mortal Instruments), I wasn't entirely convinced the teen-survival with plucky heroine genre had anything genuine left to offer. Happily I was proved wrong. Woodley's 'Tris' is let down by the coming-of-age test that should tell her what career & life path to take, so chooses to join the thrill-seeking Police/Army faction called Dauntless, instead of sticking with the more peaceful faction she was supposedly born into. Here, she finds herself surrounded by adrenaline junkies and violence as the trainers push them hard to prove that they belong, and all the time the creepy political faction Erudite seems to be up to something that could affect them all... Woodley has a great role and lives up to the demands of performing it, as Tris has to cope with challenges like discovering she's physically weak and risks losing her place in her new faction - a disaster that would result in her being rendered homeless and rejected by society - all while trying to hide the fact that her coming of age test suggests she's 'divergent' and a potential threat to those who only value the predictable and obedient. As one of her trainers, Theo James pulls subtlety and nuance into what could have just been a beefcake role, and makes you care about his secrets and emotional journey, and Jai Courtney brings a brilliant flare of bad-boy danger as a trainer who decides to push everybody harder and crueller than ever before. Fear not - this isn't essentially a 'high-school' movie - the training is just the frame at the centre of a plot in which external political manoeuvring and some outside world scheming and violence add welcome spice, and the film has the grace to have a satisfying beginning middle and end, despite it being clear that they hope to make it a franchise (which it has become with sequel Insurgent). With a solid and satisfying emotional core, a nicely realise fictional society, and some great action, this is a highly recommended purchase.

Divergent, But Not In The Way Of The Twelve Monkeys, Thankfully
From what others have said in reviews, this was similar to The Hunger Games, but as I have never seen that, I do not know.It was certainly aimed at a younger audience and I think I was exhausted just watching what all those young, active people got up to - give me a nice steady game of snooker any time.I feel as if I'd better not be specific, or I will need to add 'spoiler alert' to this review (no, there isn't one..), but I feel that there were some things that we should have seen some evidence of - why the wall?Of course there was the all-important relationship between the main actors, but despite that, I found it to be pretty dry otherwise. Also, the format was a bit too familiar wherever a group of active people do any training, but I suppose they had to start somewhere. All in all though, not bad - certainly good eye-candy.
