McGuffey's Eclectic Primer is a timeless resource that has proven to be incredibly effective for teaching young readers. This classic primer provides a solid foundation for early literacy with its simple, phonics-based approach. The content is well-organized, with easy-to-follow lessons that gradually build a child's reading skills. The use of familiar words and simple sentences helps young learners gain confidence and develop their reading abilities. The illustrations, though vintage, are charming and aid in comprehension. What I love most about this primer is its focus on phonics and moral lessons, which not only teach reading but also instill important values. It’s clear why this book has remained a trusted resource for generations—it works!Overall, McGuffey's Eclectic Primer is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to teach reading in a clear, effective manner. It’s a classic for a reason, and it continues to be a great choice for early education. Highly recommended for parents and educators alike!

20 words is too little space. This book understands how to get people reading. Taught my kids to read with this!
I highly recommend this book to teach anyone who at least has a limited English speaking vocabulary. All you and your pupil need is to know the alphabet and know the sounds each letter makes. Your pupil will be reading by the first lesson, amazed, and proud of themselves. I stumbled upon it thirty years ago when my pre-school oldest wanted to read. The local school told me to wait until he was older. I found this in the bookstore and used it to teach all of my children, who excelled in school (reading, the key). I am now using it (had to buy it again after the oldest took it for his own kids) to teach an ESL student with limited, but some English speaking skills. She is thrilled and soaking it up like a sponge, the mystery having been unlocked. Maybe it is phonics, but McGuffey really understood how to select words which built skills on each other. I initially was drawn to the book because it reminded me of the old spelling books I used in the 1950s, which taught me well. The illustrations are ok. In the hardback, we saw the pictures just fine. In the Kindle version that I have now, the illustrations are a little smaller, but you can still make everything out--a steal for the price!

Excellent Beginner!
I was amazed when I sent my son to school and heard about "sight" words......memorizing is NOT reading!! It is important that your children learn phonics so they can sound out unfamiliar words and read alone and confidently! I learned how to read at 5 out of these books and I started teaching my son how to read shortly after he turned 5. We started in Sept. when he started Kindergarten, it is now January and we have just finisher the Primer. He is reading at school ahead of all the other kids and in between a first and second grade level! He now tries to sound out everything and read new material by himself with little help! I was amazed how fast he picked up reading with this book. If you just do a few lessons a night (review the last one or two and then do a new one) you will be amazed at how fast your child will pick this up! Each lesson starts with a few new words at the top, and then a few sentences that include these words. The words themselves have pronunciation marks above them so once you child learns them they can get more confident in sounding out new words with little or no help. So pleased with this book! I now buy the first few for all my friend's when their kids start reading and they have all been pleased as well!

I love this vintage resource
I am a sold! I have used so many phonics and reading programs over the years. As a homeschooling mother and blogger of six children I appreciate good and reliable resources. Old School is the way to go for a simple and straight forward education. This is a great addition to our homeschooling and I will use it for years to come. The book is small and perfect for taking on the go. The quality is very nice and I am please with my purchase. There is not a lot of review, but that is fine with me. This is a resources and tool that I use to teach my children how to read of many. I also use games, flashcard, videos and many other resources combined to create an overall program for my children. I will say that this is wroth the purchase.

Very good, but scan quality could use improvement.
The content is pretty good, and I think reading this with my younger daughter helped her grasp reading, though once she "got" reading, she quickly moved past the very simple words and sentences in this book. It is a primer, so simple words and simple sentences are just right for the child beginning to learn to read. There is a liberal use of diacritical marks to indicate letters which aren't pronounced exactly as read, and to distinguish short from long vowels.Unfortunately, the scan quality isn't great, and some of the letters are a possible to confuse with other letters, and the diacritical marks become a little subtle (and sometimes increase the possibility of confusion); also some of the line-drawing pictures have become muddy and don't illustrate the sentences as well as clearer drawings might have.

Short and sweet, 10 min reading lessons.
This is a great book. It’s a shame schools have stopped using it! It’s so simple, sweet, and easy. My daughter is nearly five and does one lesson a day and is doing wonderfully!

Faded Letters, Hard To Read
The book itself is put together very nicely but when you open it up to start reading the letters on every page (starting in the preface) are faded, not in every word, but in the majority of them. There's no way a beginner reader could read this on their own, it is giving me a headache trying to read the words. It's like the printer was running out of ink as the pages were printing.

I think it will work well. Haven't had a chance to work with my granddaughter.
