Horse Casting Kit

What a super craft! We have made so many horses, and had so much fun with this kit. It provides hours of enjoyment on rainy days, and has prompted conversations about anatomy, the proper treatment of animals, animal intelligence, and much more. Fantastic gift for a horse lover. The kit comes with a limited amount of mix, but it can be found at many retailers. You do need to be careful with them once made, but we found just covering them with a layer of acrylic works best to protect them. Tons of fun!

She couldn't wait to do it. I mixed and poured the plaster (she's 6) and she watched over it while it dried marveling at how it set up. When it was dry she painted it and together we mounted it on a piece of painted Masonite. Took the better part of a weekend which only extended the experience. Recommend if child likes craft projects. Wouldn't recommend for an impatient child.

I would give it 5 stars except one of these mold produces a very weak leg. This is a really fun project and the molds can be used over and over. I bought extra plaster of Paris and made a ton of these for projects.

I like that the molds are reusable, the kit comes with casting, and paint. However, the information booklet should be called a pamphlet with not a whole lot of information in it. Coming from DK I thought it would have a booklet with color and more information, I was disappointed. Also the magnets are very weak, we had to add stronger magnets. Overall, this kit should be better for the price.

I got this for my little cousin for Christmas and she absolutely loved it! Will order again!

This product says you can make a mold of a "Clydesdale, Thoroughbred, and a Wild Horse for display." I don't think that's true. The three molds included are all heavy horses like a Clydesdale or Suffork Punch. One is walking, one standing, and one rearing. I would have had to do a lot of extra carving on the finished product to obtain a Thoroughbred, and since the carving would have to be equal on both halves of the horse, I'd have to join the halves and carve from that point on. This is unacceptable, especially working with chocolate or fondant. Those materials are delicate enough: to require additional, freehand carving on them would not work and result in breakage, distortion, and melting. The forms simply need to be true to breed as advertised, and I don't think they are. If you want a heavy horse model for a sleigh-, or plow-pulling scene, this product would be appropriate. But the picture on the front of the box bears no resemblance to the finished product. A waste of my time, energy, and hopes.
