Q: Is the blade stainless steel?

The blade is made of stainless steel but can't take much force or it will break.

Q: Can this coconut shredder also grate raw potatoes?

I guess you can, but the shape is not made for it. You put the coconut around the scraper, not sure how you want to do that with a potato :)

Q: Is there enough space between the blade and the countertop to place a container to catch the grated coconut?

There's a clearance of 2 1/2 inches between the bottom of the blade and the counter. I usually use a piece of wax paper or baking parchment, but a plate would fit just fine. This is a fine device; now that I've used it, I can't imagine dealing with coconut any other way. My grandmother always used a box grater; I was about 16 years old before I learned that fresh coconut didn't have to be pink!

Q: Is the grater head detachable? And would it fit a cordless drill?

Yes. That's exactly what I did. The stem has to be shortened. Try it prior to adjusting the length. You may like it as is.
