A superb read
Andrew Thompson is in the Bill Bryson mould - although better. An honest and entertaining read that will have you gripped. He also throws in a bit of love which leaves you willing Andrew and his girlfriend on through every step of their road trip. I look forward to the sequel to find out what happened to Andrew and his love interest.

Fantastic (read warning)
Brilliantly written book with an irreverent and humorous view of the states and more importantly the people and places seen along the way. Thompson has a way of describing a situation that both draws you in and transports you to the same place. This is no rose-tinted view of the US, this is a warts and all look at the underbelly of the beast! - ***** LATER UPDATE: I've dropped this two stars as later in the book, the author begins to sound more and more bitter and more and more (dare I say it!) racist. He often singles out minority groups and applies negative stereotyping which I began to find more and more offensive. The technical ("guidebook") content of the book remains good however.

Great American read!
Very well written. I don't usually read travel books but this had me gripped. A real page turner. Having always wanted to do a USA road trip, this was an insightful look into everyday America and some of its unsavoury characters. A must read if you are thinking of going. 45 states in one trip...Quite jealous of the author!

Probably one of the most tedious books I've ever read
Probably one of the most tedious books I've ever read. There is a tone of pessimism throughout the entire book and it is quite dull in all honesty. It is basically made up of account after account after account. The text is simple and with pretty much no description. The author is most of the time quite cynical and rude, more often than not confrontational and intolerant of different cultures and religions. Doesn't really capture the beauty of travel or of America and very monotone, each chapter is almost like deja vu, just reading the same thing over and over again. Terrible book in my opinion.

Condescending but funny. Worth a read.
The author is clearly a bell end who I would hate to have to serve or deal with but the book was very funny. Lucy deserves a medal.

A road trip with a difference
I read this as research for my own planned American road trip, and I have to say it gave me a very different perspective to the other travel books I read. It's very easy to get caught up with romantic visions of hitting the road, but Andrew Thompson gives us a very gritty, realistic view of what it was like for him. It is not always a pretty sight, but that's life. The book is filled with wonderful observations, and some great and clever use of language. I would say it's a must read for anyone planning a trip across America.

Good travelogue marred by offensive attitudes
Firstly, I must say that this was a well written travelogue that held plenty of interest for me as I plan to travel around the US. Sadly, it was let down by the superior tone of the author. This man believes everyone he meets is beneath him. People are described as skanks, lowlifes and plebs. Harmless people enjoying life (bikers, campervan drivers) are sneered at. Sweeping preduduces (e.g. Irish people) are found in every chapter. Every woman is described as fat and ugly except the author’s girlfriend, who throws hysterics at the slightest thing and constantly threatens to return home. Unfortunately she doesn’t. The author’s attitude to tipping is stingy and offensive, a description that could apply to the whole book. Such a shame, as the author is clearly intelligent and has a lot to offer.

I really enjoyed this book
I really enjoyed this book. It's fantastically well written. Some of the tales are so vivid. I want to take the trip that Thompson took tomorrow!!! Though maybe not on the Greyhound...
