Phone a friend for help with this stuff
This is a sourdough starter, and I got mine all bubbly in 24 hours. It worked like it said it would. I've never made sourdough before, and while there were instructions to make the starter (but also, was I supposed to cover it??), there weren't any follow up steps!I wound up calling a friend who talked me through how to tell when it needs food, what the consistency is supposed to look like, how much to leave behind after making bread (with a recipe she gave me), how to store it, etc. I wish this starter had all of this information, because I feel like actual sourdough making people wouldn't be buying this?I really like that it's gluten free and can be mixed with a variety of flours. It also formed easily and it did make some really good sourdough bread. I just really wish it had come with a "Taking care of your starter" booklet or something, because I still feel lost.

The instructions actually delayed this quick starter
I did not like this quick start sourdough starter at first for two reasons. The first, was it was way too dense with the ratio of flour to water in the instructions. And in general, I would have liked to see more flour and water incorporated from the start. A lot of my recipes call for a cup of mature starter, and this was more like a half cup. So in addition to being short, I wouldn't have had enough to keep the starter alive. The second problem I had was these included additional printed instructions. I did a rye starter and it says to sprinkle additional flour on top if you use rye. The additional flour never incorporated as the starter was dry to begin with, and made the starter unusable as a 12 hour starter. So I had to add flour and water and treat it as a traditional starter. I worked on it over the last week and made some sourdough bread today (started the dough yesterday). It tasted wonderful, one of the best sourdoughs I've ever had. It was tangy and sour but all the notes struck a nice balanced tone and flavor, and had a good texture. The bread was very yummy and I have starter for years, so 4 stars (lost a star for not being a quick start at least for me).

Great way to start baking Sourdough items
I'm a little late to the baking game when all of my friends baked the last couple of years. I had the chance to obtain starters from them but declined at the time. I found this item and thought it was easy enough. Well, easy is perspective since I found I really don't have the patience to do it justice. The added instructions are clear and there's a QR code that provides recipes, tips and how-to-videos. My first loaf turned out pretty good but I'm not sure I will continue it. I gave the remainder of the starter to a friend and will benefit from there baking.

nothing happened
Update: I feed the starter again with 50 gr of bread flour and 50ml and left it unopen for 5 more hours. The starter actually multiplied this time it was spilling out of the jar. Not sure if keeping the jar sealed was the issue earlier but leaving out in the open seemed to work. I was able to make baguette with it successfully. I'll keep feeding it from now on to see if how long I can keep it alive.I followed the instructions and mixed 50 gr bread flour with 50ml water, added the included starter and left it at room temperature over night. I did not get any bubble in the mixture. I left it there another 5 hours and still nothing happened. I guess I'll leave it there for a few more days to see if it will do something.

Not for this beginner
I have never made sourdough bread, and did not know what I was getting into with this. I really did try, but it was a disaster. I was fooled by the listing saying even a beginner can do it. I may also have been fooled by it saying any flour will work. I don’t think that was true. I also did not realize what a starter was, or what it was supposed to look like. I watched the video several times and not once did I realize I was making something that I would use when making bread - but not making actual bread. That’s my fault, I guess. I should have researched this more, but I unfortunately believed that this was good for a beginner and the instructions would be easy and clear. The photo is what my starter looked like when it was finished. It is supposed to be bubbly. It is not. I don’t know why it’s not. It is probably my lack of experience but it might also be the product. In case you’re wondering, I spent another whole day using this and making a loaf of bread that could be used as a brick. Unless you know what you’re doing, follow this advice: why make it when you can buy it!

Easy way to get started, but sourdough is still not easy. The video helps understand options.
This is an easy way to get a sourdough starter going – it’s easier than trying to capture the native yeast in the air around you. However, after that, you’re on your own regarding using this or keeping it alive. This is just your jumper cables… once the car starts, you’re on your own for maintenance. There is a QR code that has a video with useful information about what to expect with various types of flours. Unless you are rich, go with white flour as the feeding costs can be outrageous with some of the other flour options. The video was helpful in pointing that out, as the instruction sheet that came with the packet did not have this information (white flour – feed 1:1:1, rye flour – feed 1:20:20!).The video also has a recipe, but no measurements are given and there is no information in the video description, so you’re on your own for actually making bread, too, once you get your starter going. No matter how you cut it, there’s a learning curve to this.
