Good book, very informing about log cabins, however there is nothing talking or showing you anything about notching or any of the steps that you need to do from chopping the trees down to de-barking or anything if you do it yourself. Great book though, very informative.

This is an excellent book? Very well written and easy to understand. I liked that the author tells about his experiences with building and helping to build in this book as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the idea of building your own home and needs a little nudge to know that they can do it too!

Great source of information on many aspects of not just building your cabin but furnishing it and managing the land etc. Lots of information included on wood burning stoves, camp cooking, fire pits, fireplaces outhouses etc. You may not think a cabin should be a small cabin like Fears, but it is stil full of good information. I will keep it as a reference.

The subject was of interest to me and the author is clearly an expert. The writing would have been clear and easy to follow but for the huge number of copyediting errors that found their way into the e-book. They were a major distraction and caused the author's meaning to be unclear in places. If the publisher treats e-books as second class, it will become known as a publisher of second class e-books.

This book really opened my mind to many possibilities, from simple to complex, cabins. Also, all the considerations one should regard when planning a cabin: the pitfalls of the cabin's location on a plot as it pertains to weather and drainage, the question of is the solitude of a cabin right for you or do you need more social contact than you know, health code limitations, looking into the facts of the land surrounding your plot and foreseeing logging operations that would decimate your beautiful view and seclusion, security of a cabin, etc. Brilliant book by a brilliant author. Also funny and down-to-earth.

This book is SO full of good information, the author should be charging 10x's the price. I could believe after flipping through and reading for a few hours that I was only half way through.In short, this book made me horney for cabins.Even though I'm not able to do anything about it yet, when I am I'll be referring to this book A LOT.

Great guide on how to plan for a cabin and what Resources are readily available to help in preparation to buy the land and build the cabin. Helps when the author has been there and done it. Experience trumps theory.

Das Buch behandelt den amerikanischen Traum einer kleinen Hütte im Wald. Der Mann und seine Freunde angeln, grillen und trinken Bier. Die Frau kümmert sich um die Kinder und hält die Männer bei Laune.Keine schlechte Vorstellung, aber nicht das, was man von einem Buch mit dem Titel erwartet.Beinhaltet Grundrisspläne, die sich jedermann/frau sowieso selbst ausdenken kann.Keine bis kaum Konstruktionstips und schon garkeine Blockbauweise. Einige Aussagen sind historisch leider komplett falsch (zB sollen die nordamerikanischen Ureinwohner laut Autor Unterstände in Blockbauweise errichtet haben, die dann von den europäischen Pionieren übernommen wurden... Diese Bauweise kommt aus Schweden.)Die zweite Hälfte des Buches behandelt Feuerstellen (mit in den Boden einsetzbaren Metallschalen um sie "sicherer" zu machen.), Campingutensilien, Klos usw.Ich kann dieses Buch leider nicht empfehlen.Noch dazu sind rund die Hälfte der Fotos im Buch schief. Man hat sich nicht mal die Mühe gemacht sie gerade zu richten.Wer sich eine kleine Hütte bauen möchte, sollte zu einem anderen Buch greifen.Zwei Sterne vergebe ich, weil die Einleitung wildromantisch verfasst ist und Lust macht, sich mit dem Thema zu beschäftigen.

3 stars is generous. While not a bad book, it's not something I'd read again.

It was a fabulous book, it was an opportunity for some good friends to rekindle an old friendship and have a place for our kids to enjoy summers together as we did.

If you're looking for a good price and a good book on log construction this is adequate. It's not as detailed as some of the other and you'll need to know a little something about construction.
