Hanna (Ronan) is a teenage girl. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the skills of a soldier; these come from being raised by her father (Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Finland. Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own (Blanchett). As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

Hanna, starring Saoirse Ronan and Cate Blanchett
The name Hanna is short for Johanna, and the clear, stand-out star of the film is a young Irish-American actress called Saoirse Ronan who plays Hanna / Johanna. The story-line is rooted in science fiction. Johanna / Hanna is the product of a programme to create a number of human beings with an exceptional talent for killing. Her Dad, played by Eric Bana, isn't her biological father, (we never get to know who the biological father is), and it wasn't at all clear to me that her mother in the film really was 100% her mother and not just a womb for hire.A number of people like Hanna are created / engendered artificially, and most are "retired from service" by the CIA / Cate Blanchett, but Hanna was saved by her rogue ex-CIA agent "Dad" / Eric Bana and brought up secretly by him in a remote log cabin somewhere near the North Pole until he feels that Hanna is both old enough and well prepared enough to be able to take on a Cate Blanchett / CIA determined to retire from service absolutely all the artificially created human beings, including the last one still alive, Hanna. The aim of Hanna's "Dad" / Eric Bana is to draw out Cate Blanchett and have Hanna kill Cate Blanchett, and a long series of fast paced adventures ensue, with plenty of violence and corpses, that do indeed culminate in Hanna killing Cate Blanchett. The film is, I think, in places, clunky, and definitely not absolutely top flight, but it is one that I have quite happily watched more than once, and I am feeling generous so I am giving the film five stars, although, arguably, those reviewers who have given it four stars are closer to its true worth.

Three star film with a five star Saoirse Ronan
Another one from my Amazon wish list to be bought when it's cheap enough which I'm glad I did finally get round to seeing. In a nutshell, ex-spy Eric Bana raises his daughter(?) Saoirse Ronan in an unspecified tundra region to be a ruthless assassin. His aim: to get her to kill his ex-handler Cate Blanchett. Now adolescent, Bana allows Ronan to decide when she wants to start. Having decided, a signal is sent out, Bana leaves, and Ronan allows herself to be captured. What follows after that is a hunt for both of them across North Africa and Europe during the course of which Ronan begins to learn about being human..Saoirse Ronan is just bloody amazing, her acting is so subtle, restrained and concise. Cate Blanchett is superb -I know, who'd have thought?- as the frighteningly scary ruthless enemy. The rest of the cast is great too -the aforementioned Bana, Tom Hollander, Jason Flemyng, and Olivia Williams.Only problem is, I didn't believe a word of it. There's a massive high-tech underground American spy complex in the Moroccan desert. Blanchett uses a bunch of shaven headed (implicitly Nazi) thugs run by deadly but sexually ambivalent Tom Hollander. An amiable British family with parents (Flemyng & Williams) who are so liberal they'd take in a girl in early adolescence who's travelling alone rather than dropping her at the door of the nearest appropriate embassy. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief.I enjoyed it all right because of the quality of the filmmaking, the excellent cast, and the pace of the thing, but there's a whopping great but. No matter. Of one thing I am sure, Ronan is already an extremely accomplished actor who'll be gracing cinema screens for years to come and I wouldn't bet against her winning an Oscar some day. She's already had one nomination. And a final thought: much as I loved Jennifer Laurence as Katniss Everdene in The Hunger Games; Ronan would have been ever better.

A thriller in a waking dream
At heart an action film but decorated with a dream-like quality throughout that works superbly well with Ronan's delivery The film blends a whole range of quirky, stereotyped characters from a range of genres with a simplistic sequential plotline and a haunting Chemical Brothers soundtrack into something which isn't going to float everyone's boat. My boat is in the middle of an ocean on this film though - I saw it first a few years ago and have watched it a couple of times more since without losing any of the engaging impact it had the first time.It isn't an action film. It isn't really a spy thriller. It isn't a superhero story. It hasn't got a sophisticated plot. But it has elements of all of these in a mix which has it sharing the top of my all-time film list (along with Bladerunner, Cloud Atlas, Vanilla Sky and similar, if you want to gauge what that means).Aside from Ronan finding a superb role matching her ethereal delivery which really carries the film, Tom Hollander is disturbingly dangerous as Isaacs (more recent echoes of Isaacs as Lance Corkoran in The Night Manager), and Jessica Barden's portayal of Sophie is beautifully nuanced. Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett provide solid protagonists although I find the characters to be integral to the plot without adding much colour and detail. While there are one or two moments of weakness in the plot with respect to geographic continuity and actual possibilities, these are trivial and incidental to the overall quality of this film. Brilliant. Bizarre and quirky, but brilliant.

Fun action but weak plot
Not bad film. Nice concept. Unfortunately the plot is fairly weak and many things that happened did not make sense. The acting is very good and the ending is satisfying but it is nowhere near as gripping or entertaining as ..say The Bourne Identity

fight like a warrior and defend herself with ease
Every mother could wish her daughter could speak multiple languages, fight like a warrior and defend herself with ease. Love Hanna. The supporting cast is a bit dated and the way the movie unrolls does not live up to what she was trained to do. I would like to see a sequel to this movie say 10 years down the road. The ending was too abrupt.

Excelente
