Great movie under water city of Captain Nemo

I love this movie, haven't seen it since I was a kid.

Chapter 2 in th 3 chapter saga of Cpt.Nemo, after watching 20,000 Leagues Beneath th Sea, one has to watch this movie to really understand his character in Mysterious Island, they r all great classics, and literally the stuff that dreams r made from.

DVD arrived quickly and in good condition. Warner Archive collection, 105 min., widescreen, good print, no extras, no subtitles. Decent special effects for the 60s. Entertaining Captain Nemo adventure fantasy.

If you enjoy the older movies ( some in B & W, and most in SiFi mode., then movies like this is a Great source of entertainment.

This movie was made in England and it has nothing to do with Jules Verne, only using the name of Capt. Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus to fool the movie-goers into thnking that they will be in for a real treat. The colors in the sets and underwater are beautiful, but this is not a show for the young as there is the sea creature making strange noises and the battle with the rubber shark and the trail of blood that it leaves. Enjoyable, but, if you don't have a DVD player, you might not be able to see this on a recorder or computer. +JMJ+

邦題『ネモ船長と海底都市』19世紀半ばの大西洋。洋上を行くイギリス行きの船が、嵐に巻き込まれて難破する。何人かの乗客は海中に投げ出され、海の藻屑と消えつつあった。―とその時、どこからともなく、謎の救助隊が現れ、米上院議員フレーザー(チャック・コナーズ)を始め計6人を助け、不思議な潜水艦へと連れて行く。艦内で、意識を戻した6人は、船長だというネモ(ロバート・ライアン)に対面する…。ジュール・ヴェルヌの原作に着想を得た冒険映画の佳作。基本的には、ディズニーの『 海底2万マイル 』と同じ題材だが、活劇的見せ場に乏しく、スケール的にはずいぶんと小粒な印象の作品になっている。当時のヴェトナム反戦運動を反映しているのか、ネモの人類に対する不信、厭世観、そして、平和な理想郷での生活の描写などは(ヴェルヌの原作にもあるものの)、時代の空気を感じさせる。どちらかというと、子ども向けに作られた作品のようで、物語の主軸となるべき、ネモ(理想)対フレーザー(現実)の心理的葛藤、対立などには深く切り込むことをせず、原作にある強い文明批判などは感じられない。ならば、血沸き肉踊る冒険活劇になっているのかというと、矢継ぎ早に、見せ場を用意するというサービス精神もあまり感じられない。予算の都合もあったのだろうが(ミニチュアや美術は頑張っている)、せっかくの海底冒険ものにもかかわらず、襲い来る怪物(?)が、実際の小さなサメと(ちょっと稚拙な出来の)巨大エイだけというのでは、さびしい。全編、気楽に観られるが、ヒル監督の演出に物足りなさを感じる作品だ。せめてもの救いは、ロバート・ライアン演じる威厳と気品溢れるネモの姿を観られる点だろう。本DVD-Rは、米Warner Archiveのオン・デマンド・DVD-R。リマスター、レストアされていない米TCMの放映用素材をマスターにしているが、画質(2.35:1 スクイーズ)、音質ともに良好だ。本シリーズにしては珍しく、予告編(4:3スタンダード)が収録。例によって、英語字幕は未収録。北米盤のDVD-Rながら、R-0(=All)なので、日本のR-2 プレーヤーで視聴可能だ。 海底2万マイル
