QUMOX Laptop 2nd HDD SSD DVD Bay Caddy Adapter for 2.5''/9.5mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM SATA TO SATA Hard Drive External Enclosure

A really cheap simple solution for a removable disk drive on my PC.I have a trusty powerhouse Dell Precision M6800, 2013 vintage, running Windows 10, fully expanded in terms of RAM and disk drives. The one thing that stands out on this machine is the multiplicity of built in ports and ease of expansion.OK, down to business….1. I often have the need to copy many videos from this machine to my MacBook M1, and unfortunately USB 3.1 connection or SD cards can’t hack it as they are so slow. Of course this vintage machine doesn’t support USB-C which would have been faster but still not as fast as direct disk connection.2. So, the answer for me was to swap the internal DVD read/writer for a caddy that can house a 2.5” drive of my choice (usually SSD) then make that simply removable so that I can swiftly swap disks around and have very fast file copies.3. This caddy does the job brilliantly. As will be seen from the pictures I have deliberately not fitted the securing screw between caddy and PC, and then (yes, it’s a bodge) attached some strong adhesive duct tape to allow simple removal (“eject”) without taking the machine apart.4. Copy from internal SSD to the caddy based SSD runs at 550 MB/sec, much better than 20-40 using SD or USB3.All works as expected first time.On the very rare occasions I need to use a CD/DVD then I can simply connect my external DVD drive that I use on my MacBook, via a USB-C to USB3 adapter.Furthermore, I have swapped the position of the internal System Disk to “Secondary drive” and my Data disk to the “Primary drive” position, so that even the data disk can be simply removed without screws. The Bios recognised the swap so I didn’t even have to change the boot order.

I used this to upgrade my old HP Envy M6 laptop and add extra hard drive space. It was very easy to install, just plug in and use. Great if you don't use disks often, the hard drive space is much more valuable and saves having to carry an external hard drive around. Easy to pull back out and put the disk tray back in if it was ever needed. It fit my disk tray perfectly!

First of delivery by Seller was really quick and came next day as advised.The product came in blister plastic, not the Qumox bag as shown and clearly looks like other pictures for similar products so not sure if all actually the same production unit.The blister plastic you have to cut open is horrible stuff in my opinion which is why I've marked it down.The product comes with its own little tool and screws which you first loosen to insert your 2.5" hdd into. This is a quick and easy process as it is a comfy fit and the sata port only lines up one way. It feels sturdy and quality build for what it is and fit snuggly in my lenovo laptop which is reportedly .5mm smaller than this drive states.I imagine its largely laptop dependent but took me about 10 minutes to detach dvd drive and install this unit.System booted without issue and discovered the new hdd. Performance is similar to my other ssd and I've had no issues storing files and running the odd game off of it.

BEFORE YOU BUY: check the height of your cd/dvd device. This one is 9.5mm.Seamless work. I have it for over 6 months and never single problem with it.One thing I need to mentions is its kinda exposed so if you travel a lot and want to protect your laptop from dust etc you may want to fabricate a 3d printed cover.It gives so configuration options at the POST boot, but I dont really remember what it was (AFAIK there was some hardware RAID config)It has an activity led, quite bright at night.

This is easy to install. be careful removing the DVD/CD from the laptop [has a screw usually near the centre on the back. remove the DVD/CD drive plastic front cover and replace with the spare in the caddy box. Then carefully put this front cover you removed onto the caddy [that way the shape matches your laptop]. Once you do that you can then install the HDD into the caddy - screw the grubscrews to secure HDD and then move the little bracket that secured the dvd in place. It was fantastic that the caddy had the holes and slots perfect for my laptop model it claimed this fitted - it did.. I then slid the caddy in and rescrewed in the dvd/cd retaining screw at the back of the laptop - went into bios to enable the drive and then booted up. I then formatted the partition and volume - then windows added the drive- FANTASTIC product and easy to install. Highly Recommended.

I bought this so that I could dual boot Linux and Windows 10. After many issues with Windows updates breaking my laptop I decided to switch to Linux Mint as my main driver, however I still needed the option of running Windows 10 on the odd occasion. I decided to remove my optical drive because who uses them anymore??? Using this caddy I used an old 500gb hard drive that I had and installed Windows on it and then installed Linux Mint on the main hard drive.The caddy was really easy to fit, just make sure you get the right size. The whole hardware update took me about 10 minutes. Some of the reviews mention that the caddy comes without a face plate which is true and totally understandable, laptops come in various designs and it would be a challenge to provide a face plate that would fit every style of laptop. However there are mounting points on the outward facing side of the caddy to attach a face plate. The face plate on my optical drive was removable so I just attached that to the caddy as per the photos.As a side point if anyone wants to try dual booting Linux and Windows this way I had to install Windows 10 first on the secondary hard drive (make sure you format the hard drive first otherwise it might not be recognized as a bootable device) and then install Linux on the main hard drive otherwise the PC wouldn't boot. According to some forums it's to do with the Windows boot manager. Then all you need to do is set the boot order in BIOS.In conclusion the caddy is a steal at £6, I feel like I have a new PC! This is a great option if you want to dual boot or increase the storage on your PC. Highly recommended.

Installation was easy and fast, and is working great in the computer. Doesn't feel like it's made from the best materials but fit and finish is good. Interesting mounting system for hard drive. Screwdriver built in to the housing and snaps in the recess for the hard drive after use.Only complaint was it was shipped with insufficient protection, just a padded envelope. When received hard drive adapter was dented. Have to carefully take apart and bend the shell back into shape before I could use it.

Install went quick and easy, perfect for adding another hard drive or ssd. Make sure you get the right size and measure cause there are a few different depths and styles to consider depending on the age of your laptop

It was a bit fiddly to fit inside the Samsung laptop. It was easier to fit by inserting it while the laptop was upside down, then turn it over to press it all the way in, then fit the locking screw. Otherwise, allows me to use a second drive with no problems.

Acheté pour installer un HD en plus dans un Dell Satellite E4300. Fourni avec le petit tournevis qui va bien, une mini notice imprimée directement sur le caddy. Les dimensions sont exactes, il s'implante sans aucun problème dans le PC. possède même les trous pour l’équerre de fixation. La face avant du lecteur slim 9.5 d'origine s'adapte parfaitement. Fonctionnement OK dès la mise en route. Avec un SSD 128 double boot Windows 7 et 8.1, j'ai maintenant un HD Seagate Momentus XT 500 Go. Bref un bête de course et que du bonheur. Alors n'hesitez pas, a ce prix là. Inutile de dépenser plus.

ASUS X550Zに使用しましたが、バッチリ認識して使えてます。SSD250GBとHDD１TB構成で載せ替えられて満足です。容量不足な方には重宝する製品だと思います。1点だけ欲を言えば、どこか引っ張る箇所を作って、スライドさせてスッと抜き差しが出来るようにしたら最高なのではないでしょうか。そうすれば、裸の内蔵HDDを簡単に差し替えが出来て良いんではと考えますが、まだそんな製品が登場しないので、QUMOXさん作ってください。
