Not bad, but not great, either...
I have to preface this review by stating I am accustomed to using the SDU-5/E emergency strobe at sea with the U.S. Navy, a far superior product, in my opinion...The unit seems reasonably well constructed, albeit without the "heft" associated with the military grade unit (last photo). There is an o-ring designed to protect the battery compartment from water intrusion, how well it would prevent this remains unseen. It also takes standard "AA" batteries unlike the military grade unit. This unit also does not employ an actual "strobe light" based on a gas which emits light when electrical energy is passed through it, but LED's, which seem bright and the unit states it meets SOLAS requirements. The strobe comes with velcro affixed as well as a small line to secure to a life jacket or similar. It also has 2 modes, the normal high intensity flash and a lower intensity flash from a single LED.The million dollar question, would I use this at sea to ensure being found? I suppose so, but it is not the only safety item I would bring. Flares would definitely be a necessity, as well as a marine handheld with DSC.The other question, is it worth nearly $60?? I say, "No".... In my opinion, $30 - $40 would be more appropriate. However, this is designed for the marine environment, so as it goes with boats, "Bust Out Another Thousand"....I normally do not write reviews "out of the blue", but felt compelled to do so in light of discovering this unit has only a slight semblance to the military grade SDU-5/E which is what I was expecting in quality and manufacture...Hope this helps...Garry

Solid Unit Made in the USA
It looks as if there is a wire cage in the 1 photo on Amazon, however it's actually a clear lexan/plastic permanent cap.It looks like there should be 3 strobes, one on either side, and one in the chrome cup, mine just lights the 2 outer leds. They seem pretty bright to me and are comparable to my other strobe, I like the fact they use AA and it has a magnetic switch to turn it off and on.As for the tiny instructions printed on the outside of the box it's nice, just need a bigger box.I'm sure for night time sea rescues, boating, man overboard, lost in the deep woods at midnight, then this strobe would be just fine.It looks much bigger than on Amazon than in person, easiest way to convey it's dimensions, take 2 AA Batteries and stack them on top of each other, that's about how tall it is, and it's about 1 AA wide, or if you took 6 AA's that would be the total footprint of the unit nice and compact, it has industrial Vecro installed on the back, in the correct fashion, it's easy to stick it anywhere a piece of soft velcro is, like a plate carrier, ball cap, etc. And there are 2 molded in place strap mounts, the whole unit looks like it's built for an emergency and looks tough, I'll put that to the test. And I'll come back if it fails that test.

Outstanding safety item
Although a bit more expensive than the lesser brands, this strobe light performs and has the capabilities I am looking for as a kayaker and hiker. The durability is unparalleled and its size compact.

The One to Get!
First, regarding reviews that batteries don't fit...I suspect they are trying to use rechargeable batteries which run at the top of the spec for both diameter and length (bigger battery-more mAh). I am using Duracell alkaline and they fit perfectly. Just test periodically and replace them annually as per instructions.I am a professional diver and insist on top quality in my gear. It's kind of a safety thing, you know?I HIGHLY recommend that you apply some silicone grease to the o-ring of the battery compartment and make certain there is no dirt or debris.ProsLight, tough, super bright (don't look directly at it - seriously), compact, excellent design, made in USAConsThey might have included a Velcro strap for the price which is not cheap :)Note: This is NOT a flashlight. It's one fantastic emergency signaling strobe that might just save your life!

Bought 2 both work... will they last???
So I bought 2. The plastic is a bit thin for what I would expect a "emergency device." Using mine in my "crash bag" in my helicopter. So not for Marine use for me. They kinda pricey.... but they are legitimately bright. These are fundamentally BRIGHT LEDs with mirrors.... Not a conventional strobe light. If I every crash the helicopter in the middle of no-where...or I made an precautionary landing...I'll find out if they really work. Until then... who knows??

great light. Does not come with backing for velcro
This has the benefit is security it using velcro, however, it only comes with one half of the velcro, so you will have to find a compatible swatch of velcro to match up to it.This has a manual switch so you can turn it on and off at will, which is desirable for kayaking in the ocean, where falling into the water is just part of kayaking in surf.

Its Nice
This is a nice light, BUT, I was expecting something much larger than the palm of my Hand, Its maybe 3 1/2 inches by 2 inches wide, Throws a very strong light, Is water proof, But more for a person than a stranded vessel , I think, Maybe I am wrong, Does throw a good light though
