Emergency Care for Birds: A Guide for Veterinary Professionals

Although it’s a small book, it’s comprehensive, easy to understand and has awesome graphics. I was a little doubtful when I opened the package because of the book’s size, but DEFINITELY don’t judge by size! This book covers all major diseases that could possibly affect birds, and breaks it down in an easy-to-comprehend way. Per disease/ symptom, there is a section for “advice for first aid at home” and “emergency care by a veterinary professional” which I think is awesome since avian vets can sometimes be very far away! This also aids in advising clients on patient care at home. The “birds as emergency patients” section is great as it covers all topics including heat, fluid therapy, nutritional support, etc. This handy little book provides a comprehensive overview of every step needed to stabilize the emergent avian case. It even has a “quick guide” section for stabilizing hypothermia, hypovolemia, etc. The appendices covers some keystone techniques and skills used in avian veterinary medicine, such as placing a crop tube and applying (splint) bandages. There’s a table of (possibly) poisonous plants, extra avian veterinary materials and more! (All with great pictures). If you’re looking to get a glimpse into the world of avian veterinary medicine, this is a great place to start! So affordable and informative. What a great buy!
