Kubrick's cold, hard, perspective
All four of the great Vietnam films: Apocalypse Now; The Deer Hunter; Platoon; and this one, have a different perspective on the hell that was Vietnam. Kubrick sets the tone for his with the title, Full Metal Jacket. Not a person, a group of people, or the nature of the war, but a characteristic of the bullets used in a Marine's rifle. It's a story about dehumanisation: In the first half the deliberate and ruthlessly applied process of training; reducing the men from individuals to one soldier amongst many with a single purpose: to kill. As their Drill Sergeant tells them (para), 'One marine may die, the marines go on forever'. They are made into killer ants in a colony. The impact of this on one sensitive mind, crushed into conformity and then beyond, is the 1st key point in the film. Kubrick dwells on this in a way which gives the outcome real horrific power. And they haven't even got to Vietnam yet.In Nam, they display a certain amount of camaraderie because of this shared 'Marine Identity' but they are as ready to be cruel to each other as tolerant, and there's little real affection between them. Only loss on the battlefield raises any real emotion, and that's as much about hate, outrage, and revenge, as it is about a fellow soldier. Brutalisation joins the dehumanisation. A soldier picking off civilians, including women and children in the paddy fields is the 2nd key illustrative moment of this further loss of humanity. There's almost no theatrically set-up tension or 'excitement' in the film. It's in many ways ice-cold in its objectivity, and the war is seen as having become 'just daily life': no moral questioning, no reflexions on the war or why it's even happening. The lead character 'Joker' (and others) are bored being behind the lines, and want to go to the front and kill. Joker wants to be the first person on his street at home to have a confirmed kill under his belt. He is elated at his first experience of killing (at a distance), but his first up close and 'conscious' experience forms the 3rd key moment in the film, illustrating what the training and combat has done to him and his fellow marines by this time. Again, Kubrick dwells on this scene with great intensity. The 4th and final key moment is Joker's final reflection on this all: totally deadpan - no thoughts, moral reflections ,or even emotions about the war itself; no mention of fellow marines (alive or dead) he has known; no interest in the slaughter of thousands and the destruction of a country; just glad he himself is still alive. So detached self-interest has now joined dehumanisation and the ready acceptance of brutality being normalityit's a very strong film, but I only give 4 stars because the very nature and power of the approach and comment Kubrick is making, and how he renders it painfully banal, means, for me, that it's hard to care for or relate to anyone in the story.

Do not piss off the Drill Instructor- “Yes Sir”
U.S. Marine recruits going through Hell in basic training- Part 1 . You must be absolutely strong in mind and body, to survive. When you graduate, you are now the Military’s Elite Killing Machine. Vietnam 🇻🇳 War- Part 2 . Keep your weapon close and keep your head down. Music 🎶 is perfect for the time 🕰️ Combat scenes are intense and riveting. Snipper - a platoons deadliest hidden enemy. Part 3 - try not to get shot and watch your brothers back. Staying alive, and getting back home 🇺🇸 to friends and family- Part 4 finale act 🙏
