Go Navy
The opening scene in "Top Gun" is the best way -- bar none -- for showing off a new TV or sound system. With no transition at all, you suddenly find yourself on the deck of a very busy, very dangerous aircraft carrier with very large jets moving around, threatening to blow off, run over, or slice and dice unwary deck crewmen. The driving rock score, mixed with the sounds of aircraft launches, is expertly blended together into a ballet that concludes with a catapult launch of an F-14 Tomcat off the bow. Going from zero to 140 knots in 120 feet is an absolutely ridiculous thing to do with a 20-ton aircraft, but it is something the U.S. Navy does all the time.Once you have tested your video and sound system in the first couple minutes, a movie breaks out. There is the outcast hero, the femme fatale, the superiors who don't understand the hero, and villains. The villains are a bit different, in that they have supersonic jets, but it is otherwise standard movie fare. But of a very high standard. The photography alone makes this an amazing movie; even people who hate Tom Cruise or think his role is a bit too juvenile even for a naval aviator won't be able to resist the glorious aerial photography. The film was shot long before HDTV was invented, and it isn't the best showcase for Blu Ray, but that doesn't mean it isn't outstanding and, frequently, glorious. One important thing to keep in mind: this movie is about the U.S. Navy. Interviewing movie goers two decades ago, a majority thought the film was about the "Air Force." No, the Air Force doesn't fly over endless tracks of ocean, doesn't take off from short, moving runways in all weather, and doesn't fly the (now retired) F-14. Naval aviation has its own unique challenges, and "Top Gun" gives you a simplistic, but thrilling, overview of one of the world's most dangerous professions.

TOP GUN - Blu-Ray
I saw TOP GUN in the theater, owned it on VHS & DVD, this blu-ray I just bought for $10.00 is no doubt the best I've seen and heard. I love this movie even more now than ever before. What really amazed me is how great the surround audio is, the audio on DVD disappointed me big time and thank goodness, this blu-ray made up for it, what a superb upgrade even with the video. I love the aerial and F-14 shots, Tony Scott really made a magnificent job with it, in my opinion, along with the great surround sound, it makes you feel like you're sitting right there inside that cockpit. I love this blu-ray and I highly recommend it, it will make a great addition to your movie library. Thank you, Paramount, for giving this movie the superb upgrade it deserves.

Top Gun Blu Ray edition........WHOOOOSH
Well, the dialogue is down right corny and the actual "in cockpit" footage isn't all that great given the fact that this is supposed to be about pilots and their machines, the fact of the matter is, if you loved Top Gun when it first took flight back in the 80's it's all the more reason to see this in HiDef. The sound track in any set up outside of plain stereo is great and the sounds of the jet engines swooshing by you from front to back and left to right and so on is just booming. I could do without the sausage fest of the volleyball scene but that was the hook for the female crowd. I could do with more flight scenes and fight footage but I didn't write the script. The videos of the songs are a nice inclusion, too.

Better then ever.
Top Gun is an amazing movie plain and simple. I watched it 3 times on VHS in a row the first time I saw it. Its the perfect movie to watch with a girlfriend because it offers enough action and romance to keeps both parties interested. But i'm sure this has all been said before, the real question is "Is it worth it on blue ray?" My awnser, ABSOLUTELY. The movie looks better then ever, the blue's and oranges have been tweaked but it gives the movie a more vibrant modern look. The plains look amazing, and the in cockpit views provide some of the best detail images of any blue-ray movie released. The the visuals and audio experience manages to keep up with todays standards while still keeping the charm that made the movie so great to begin with. Whether your a old fan or a new one, this movie remains top notch, and is definitly worth the upgrade to blu-ray.
