Blue Bird

Love it! A classic favorite.
One of my classical favorites. Sends a warm message to help remind us to always be grateful for what we have. The future scene was my favorite. No matter how much time I watch this movie, it never gets old. Show it to the kids and now they love it too.

Where Can I Find Happiness?
A little girl's pursuit of a blue bird that she insists will bring her happiness takes her on a quest into the worlds of wealth, the past, the future & back home to her own domestic environment. She finds it at home after all. What I find unique about this movie is its use of the concept of an existence of people before they're born into mortal lives. This is introduced by means of a search for the blue bird in the future. There are several, though a small percentage, of movies that are about people who are reunited in an after-life following the death of the second one, but Blue Bird is the only significant movie that I know of where we look into relationships that are struck up before people are born! It's a delight to watch, & made the more precious because it runs for so little time, relatively speaking.

Sentimental movie
If you believe that we existed in the spirit world before coming to earth to receive our physical bodies to learn and grow and return to live with our Heavenly Father again, you will like this movie. My mother has talked about this movie her entire life, she is 87. I bought two copies - one for her and one for me and my own children. Very sweet and Shirley Temple is a perfect rotten little brat, which shows her versatility as a child actress.

Very cute movie
Very cute movie. So much like Wizard of Oz but when SHIRLEY Temple didn’t get the part of Dorothy they just wrote her a movie as close to it as they could. It is adorable though. I really enjoyed it.

Fond Memories Despite Its Shortcomings.
THE BLUE BIRD is based on an allegorical fantasy by the Belgian poet & playwright Maurice Maeterlinck (PELLEAS & MELISANDE), a leading member of the Symbolist movement. This story of two children searching for the Blue Bird of Happiness made its debut on stage in 1908 to great success. It was a made into a famous silent film by Maurice Tourneur in 1918 before this 1940 version. It was disastrously remade as a Russian-American co-production in 1976 despite having Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Taylor & Cicely Tyson in the cast and being directed by George Cukor. It's generally well known that Shirley Temple was originally supposed to be Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ. Despite the fact that OZ was not a success at the box office (its iconic status would come later on TV), Fox decided to pull out all the stops on this fantasy. What they didn't do was make a typical Shirley Temple vehicle. There are no big musical numbers, she plays a selfish, unhappy little girl (much to her delight), and true to Maeterlinck, the story is deliberately abstract. What WAS changed is that in the original the roles are reversed. The brother is the leader, not the sister. The principal roles are well cast with Gale Sondergaard an elegantly malevolent cat, Eddie Collins a remarkably faithful dog, and Nigel Bruce doing a variation on Dr Watson as Mr. Luxury. It was also nice to see Al Shean (of GALLAGHER & SHEAN fame and the Marx Brothers' uncle) as the Grandfather. However, the film is not devoid of shortcomings. Cuts made after the original release have made some scenes uneven, the dialogue is sometimes trite & saccharine, and the sequence in the Kingdom of the Future (where all the children are white) reflect the Hollywood of 1940.This new DVD version is certainly a nice improvement over the old VHS version. The color sequences are lovingly restored with an especially intense forest fire and a wonderful midnight sequence in the graveyard. Unfortunately it doesn't restore footage that was cut after the initial release. English subtitles are always welcome but more special features would have been nice. While Shirley is fine, she's not the reason I like THE BLUE BIRD. I like it for its atmospheric lighting, the messages it conveys, Alfred Newman's music score and the way it captures a child's sense of wonder.

Beautiful. One Of Cinema's Most Elegant Fantasies
this is a beautiful film fantasy. probably one of the most beautiful ever filmed. it's also still under-appreciated to an extent. it doesn't have the same broad entertainment appeal that say 'OZ' does, but it's a much more attractive film. it's lush set design and photography are mostly due to it's director Walter Lang who was known for this kind of look. it also features Shirley Temple in probably one of her most sophisticated roles as a child. her MyTyl charachter is a anti-hero (or heroine) of sorts. she doesn't start out as good or likeable. very different from the roles offered her at the time. children's cinema hardly ever looks this good or is this noteworthy. definitely a must for any child's classics collection.

Peace of mind over faulty dvd
The rating for the quality of the picture and sound was 5 but the faulty dvd rating I give 1.The film was a present for an elderly friend which she first saw as a child with her mother in the 1930s. Unfortunately the dvd only played for half of the film before it started jumping and then totally froze. I tried the dvd on my own player and again it froze in the same position. The quality of the film upto that point was very good resulting in being disappointed with the product.10/10 for Amazon for their prompt reaction on accepting back the faulty dvd and reimbursement to us.Thank youMc
