Three iconic 16' Canary Island palms that were transplanted began to show tip yellowing which was worsening during the third year at their new location. After searching for possible causes, I decided it was magnesium deficiency, of which Canary Island Palms are very susceptible. For each tree I used a crow bar and made 10 2' deep holes around the trunks at the radius of the frond tips. One Lutz magnesium spike went into each hole. Watering and fertilizing continued through the summer as usual (about 100 gallons per tree per week).Sure enough, the new growth last season was cured and didn't show any yellow tips. Although the damage is done to the old fronds and the yellowing tips can't be reversed, the new growth still looks fantastic. Since the soil here is heavy clay and the magnesium most likely won't leach out, I will apply 5 spikes per tree and asses this years growth.Overall I am very pleased that Lutz magnesium spikes corrected the yellow tips on these iconic palms.
