Pale shadow of the original anime
When I first watched NISWOG yes I was blown away for the first one third and thought I'd never seen such original and compelling anime. The second two thirds were not quite as good, as the story seemed to unravel somewhat, but still.. it was an amazing experience. So much so that I researched the thing and found that it was a follow on to Tatami Galaxy. Naturally I acquired TG, and so glad I did. TG beats NISWOG in every department in my opinion: graphics, music (opening, ending, incidental), characters, creativity in style, storyline.. you name it. The really big difference for me was that TG characters are much more subtly drawn and each conveys real personality, but are reduced somewhat to caricatures in NISWOG, contrary to the director's assertion that graphics have improved, in the 'making of' extra feature. The one exception to this superiority might be the extremely rapid delivery of some of the speech / subtitles in TG, so that to take it all in I had to watch the first time with one finger on the pause button of the remote. But I considered that a small price to pay. NISWOG is a movie, an hour and a half long or so, while TG is a series of 11 episodes each around 25 minutes long - so you get way more for your money with TG, along with better quality. As for those who say you can watch NISWOG without seeing TG first, well yes, you can.. in fact I did, but I came to learn that TG sets out the full story of life in Kyoto University while NISWOG seems more like a wild dream fantasy with little coherence to it unless you know TG first. As they say, NISWOG is good but the further upstream you swim, the sweeter the water.

Fun and unique but not for everyone
First off, this movie is not for everyone, and there are plenty of things in the film that may be charming and likeable to one person and frustrating to others. This movie reuses characters and ideas from a show called The Tatami Galaxy, however you do not need to have seen that show to like this film. I had only seen one episode of Tatami and could still follow the 'plot' well enough.I say 'plot' in quotation marks because this film doesn't really have one, which may effect your enjoyment. It starts out as a pub crawl style film, with a black haired girl (or Otome, which means the same thing) exploring and drinking while a man known as Senpai stalks her to try and confess his love. Otome essentially pushes the plot wherever she feels like it.This film is very absurd and has a lot of strange characters that seem to be along for the ride. The film also kind of expects you to just accept what you see and move on, so characters will appear out of nowhere and act like they were there the whole time. I didn't find this film as laugh out loud funny as I'd heard it was, but it can still be amusing at points, if only because of its sudden shifts into random nonsense. Something important to note though is that the subtitles move quickly as the characters often relate large chunks of information in speedy monologues. This happens in Tatami too, though thankfully this film isn't as much of a constant bombardment on your senses like the show is. There is no dub, so if you can't read quickly and process the scenery at the same time then you might find yourself getting annoyed at the quick pace and lack of breathing room. But I suppose you can always just use the pause and rewind button!I mainly picked this up because the animation intrigued me, and yes it certainly delivers, especially towards the end of the film. The character designs have a charm to them that while animesque, is still very unique. On a more negative note, though I'm talking now about the product itself, I do not think the collectors version by 'All the Anime' is worth the extra money. I mainly bought this version because after the seeing the unique look of the animation I thought it would be interesting to see concept art in the art book. However, the book is very limited and contains only clean character studies, a few pics of the settings and a kind of run down of the film. This might sound like a lot, but its not really. The actual box and presentation of the dvds are very nice, but again not worth extra money. In comparison the art book 'All the Anime' released for Lupin the Third Part 4 contained much more character expressions and some rough concept sketches of settings, vehicles, weapons etc. I guess it depends if you just want a dvd that is more 'pretty' or not on your shelf. All in all, this film has a lot to like and has a lot of themes surrounding love and the connections between people, but if you prefer more straight-forward plotting that isn't constantly throwing information at you, then you probably won't like this, or at least won't return to it again after watching it once.

Tomodachi Punch!
Based on the novel "Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome" by Tomihiko Morimi and directed by Masaaki Yuasa ("Lu over the Wall", "Devilman Crybaby") this comedy is about the strange and event-filled night shared by Senpai and his unaware crush Kohai. It is set in the same universe as "The Tatami Galaxy" by the same creation team but you do not need to have seen that film in order to watch this one. Much of the story centers around four acts: drinking games, the used-book market, the school fair, and the viral cold. The original novel is told as four stories in four seasons combined into a single night for the film. The movie has a lot to say about youth, love, writing, friendship & connections, wisdom, and time. At the same time it is also about fun hijinks and incredible dialogue animated in a brilliantly-solid colored almost cartoony (but distinctly anime) art style that isn't afraid to go off-model. It changes from minimalistic outlines to giant set pieces to frame skipping movements in ways that compliment the emotion and happenings of this highly enjoyable story.I first saw the movie in theaters and liked it so much I saw it twice and immediately pre-ordered it as soon as it became available. I think a major reason the comedy works so well is the perfectly timed/scored music and sound editing/mixing. The film is unusual in that it has four acts whereas most movies these days are told in three acts. I discussed this with a friend who thought it felt long (even though it is 93 minutes) because he was expecting it to end after the third and didn't realize it until I pointed it out.You can watch this film with pre-teen audiences who don't mind reading subtitles (the film is not rated but recommended for 13+) but there might be two sticking points: 1) the large amount of drinking in the first act and only the first act 2) references to erotica. I don't think either of these are actually large issues because 1) even in Disney films like "Beauty and the Beast", "Pinocchio", and "The Great Mouse Detective" there is a plenty of drinking 2) they likely just won't understand the erotica much like the adult jokes in Disney films that the kids think are funny but for the wrong reasons.I highly recommend this film even if you have not seen a lot of anime.
