A fantastic movie and adaptation, which is good because that's all there is to this disc
I'll admit bias as a fan of the original manga and anime, but Rurouni Kenshin manages to be a fantastic adaptation of the first "arc" of the series. While not lacking for action sequences--and they are quite fantastic action sequences--the live-action version has stripped the series of its more over-the-top bits (except for Jin-E's paralysis technique) and replaced it with more kinetic, free-flowing setpieces that are acrobatic and fast-paced.Two of my favorite characters have taken hits in the backstory department (Yahiko and Sanosuke) but all of the protagonists' personalities shine through in the performances given them. The majority of the antagonists have been condensed into two characters--Kanryu Takeda from Megumi's opening arc is the mastermind behind a lot of the plot, with Jin-E Udo as his second--and while Kanryu is one mustache twirling away from being able to summon puppies and kittens for the express purpose of kicking them, the sad fact is that a lot of the early villains were two-dimensional and had no way of being painted otherwise. Jin-E's arc is quite faithful, though, and allows him to have a slightly deeper backstory. While the steelbook is extremely pretty (if spartan), there are virtually no extras on the disc save for a trailer. No making-of materials, no interviews, no commentaries (which would be in Japanese anyway, if they made them). You paid for the movie, and they're giving you the movie. Hopefully that's enough to satisfy you--at £10 (when I purchased it) I thought it was a good deal, but at £20 only die-hard fans of Japanese cinema and the anime/manga need apply. Quite a pity that this is the only way to legitimately acquire the movie in English at all.

Great movie, well worth watching
I'd not seen the original manga series, so the characters and story were entirely new to me, and I had no expectations other than an awareness of the very positive reviews this film has received. But I was very pleased that I rented this movie - it was thoroughly enjoyable to watch, with a great story, good characterisation, and excellent fight sequences. And I also found the historical insight fascinating - I knew next to nothing about Japanese 19th century history, so this was a bit of an eye-opener too.The acting was generally very good for all characters, but I think the actor who played the sinister, but also somewhat comical, drug lord must have had the most fun with his slightly OTT performance - great fun to watch!

Awesome!!!!
The moment it came in the mail I was surprised to know the steel-book cover was beautiful to fit the movie. It comes with Blu-ray and UV disk copy that allows you view extra's and different languages while you're in the middle of the film. What I love about this movie is the style that is provided throughout the whole movie. You're not cofused about what is going on, it gets right to the point and the acting is awesome in ways I cannot imagine. The down part for me is that its so good I wish it would have been longer. But viewing it from a standpoint of anime/ manga sense, I loved it. I can see why it was so highly rated in 2013. The product has surpassed my expectations.

Wondering swordsman, from the page to film :)
fantastic film, amazing. I am a MASSIVE fan of the manga books and the TV series. This film is a faithful look at the first arc (with the exception of Sanoske and Yahiko being somewhat pushed into the background ) it really does nail the look and feel.why drop the 1 star then?THE BLOOMING SUBTITELS is what blow's it! I enjoy the original Japanese as well as English sub's. I have a digital copy of the film as well as the DVD. the copy film has fan sub subtitles and let me tell you it's far better than the drivel the DVD throws out at you. I've herd this is an issue with allot of subbed Japanese films and I don't understand why? if a fan can sit down and do this and be faithful to the film and charters, translating it in a clear and coherent manner then what is the issue with the people in charge of such things?A bit rangy but the film rock's, the sub\s blow. I would suggest looking for a copy with better english sub's.

Amazing film!!
I don't think I could find anything wrong with this film apart from that it left me wanting more. Even though its an anime to film adaptation its done very well, there isn't any cheesy acting (few annoying parts here and there), instead it flows very well.Plenty of action and funny moments and just an all round enjoyable film. And the subtitles are easy to read as well as fitting with the film itself. I reckon this is easily the best film I've seen in the last year.

Great Conversion
They did a great job getting the major points of season 1 into 2 hours of movie. They completely changed the oniwaban group for time purposes. They couldn't give the group the depth and story they deserved so they changed them. I was happy to see the change rather then a hollow story behind the infamous group.

CLASSIC
I'm a big big fan of Asian Cinema and have seen hundreds of them. This film is going to become a classic. Absolutely superb. I cannot fault it in any way whatsoever. I didn't want it to end it was that great. A must have film for any movie collection. An easy 5 stars.

Happily Surprised
Okay, So if you were looking for a faithful adaptation to one of the greatest manga/ anime stories of all time - You're not going to find it here. There are a couple of elements that are missing, and the UK- Subtitles were painful to me as they didn't go with the Media Blasters dub/ subs, and While I enjoyed Saitou's involvement in this story, I am vexed that he was brought in so early. But the action totally makes up for any misgivings I have. The Steel case is awesome, and I am so VERY happy it was available to me in the US, because while Warner Released it over seas We still have not gotten an official release and what I have seen of the bootleg is total rubbish.i can't wait until parts 2 and 3 are given the same treatment!

Love It!
I don't know why it took me so long to find and watch this movie. I have been a fan of Rurouni Kenshin ever since I first watched it in Japan over 17 years ago. It was worth the wait though. The casting was perfect! All of the actors felt real to me and were the characters. The story was great and the music really fit the moments. I am anxiously awaiting the next two parts!
