It opens with a excellent short introduction to Shrine Shinto and its practices
This is not a coffee table book to be casually perused, but more suited to those interested in learning about the Shinto shrines of Japan. It opens with a excellent short introduction to Shrine Shinto and its practices. It only covers 57 of the 80,000 plus shrines, but these are among the most famous and popular. It contains a wealth of information about each shrine's location, history, architecture, spiritual features, and best times to visit.

Great book!
As a frequent traveler to Japan I found the information in the book useful in my desire to visit many of the shrines mentioned. I highly recommend the book for a good basic understanding of Shinto and the mythology of ancient Japan.

Nicely organized & useful guide book!
This is the best guide book to learn about Japanese Shrines. It's not a ordinary travel guide book! This small book is nicely organized and contains a lot of useful and educational information. If you are interested in Japanese Shrines, this book tells us what it is all about. Highly recommended!

An interesting good book which needs to be improved
Quite scholar and academic the book is plentyfull of precious and relevant informationsAfter a short historical about shinto, terms and parts of the architecture are detaily explained.Accurate drawings illustrate this part of the subject. An interesting part is made for festivals.A big part of the shrines of the study have been chosen subectivlyThey are all introduced with informations which will be helpful to the tourists.then followed by a historical and their specificsThe book format is regretfully rather small and compact. With such dimensions more than a study it's rather a heavy tourist guide which will noticeably load any bagTo this i regret that the book doesn't offer any complete map featuring all chosen shrinesThe choice of the places is not the one i would have done.More than diging deep into the subject the book turns to be more likely an introduction to different places worth being visited.Of course the richness of the explanations, the translation of all japanese terms have to be praised.Compared to others the book appears a bit emotionless, thankfully from the illustrations emanate the Shinto spirited energy.
