Time Fades Away & Where The Buffalo Roam (Two on One / Digi-Pack)

This is probably Neil Young's greatest album. I got it originally on first release on LP, but managed to lose it at some point in the ensuing decades. I spent years searching for a CD release, which as you probably already know Young himself has opposed (for what I guess are personal reasons of considerable weight, rather than musical ones). This German issue bundled with the soundtrack for "Where the Buffalo Roam" has excellent sound and has classic versions of "Journey Through the Past", "Love in Mind", and a bunch of great songs (such as the title cut) that seem to have had no other release than on this album. I note that there is now an official reissue of the LP on vinyl (!) and hopefully this means that Mr. Young has relented and will permit an official CD release in the USA.The bundled album "Where the Buffalo Roman," soundtrack of the file about Hunter S. Thompson starring Johnny Depp, is mostly great recordings by other artists (Hendrix, Dylan, the Temptations, Creedence and the Four Tops) linked together by rather whimsical orchestrations (by Young) of "Home on the Range." The one segment where Young sings the lyrics a capella is beautiful, though.

This appears to be a copy from a vinyl record as you can hear a few pops and clicks. I don't mind too much since Neil hasn't seen fit to re-release it proper yet. The bonus "Buffalo Roam" material was nice to hear once but the gem is Time Fades Away.

One of Neil's greatest albums, live or studio. This package includes a soundtrack from an obscure Bill Murray movie that Neil did the music for. The 'Time Fades Away' live portion is some of the best I've ever heard from Neil Young. The transfer onto this CD must have been taken directly from some old vinyl, you can hear the cracks a pops on most of the tracks. Makes for a great listening experience. Can't figure why Neil has never properly released this album in the years since it was first released it '73.

This CD replaced an old, scratched vinyl record I bought decades ago, although it was only 'Time Fades Away'. I had not listened to it for almost 40 years. This blast from the past was worth the cost, plus I got an extra CD that I did not even know existed. What a deal!

Waited a long time for this album, the "Times Fade Away"part. Never heard of "Where The Buffalo Roam" and probably won't listen to it again.. The title track "Times Fade Away" is a real classic. One wouldn't think that this was a live album.

Der Grund für eine weitere Rezension ist der Umstand, dass ausgerechnet "Time fades away" diejenige Neil Young Platte ist, die über die Jahre am meisten gewachsen ist und m. E. "Zuma", "On the Beach", "Tonights the Night", "Rust Never sleeps" etc. überragt. Woran liegts? Keiner der Songs kann für sich allein Klassikerstatus beanspruchen, wie z. B. "Like a Hurricane", so dass es nicht am Songwriting liegen kann. Denkbar ist, dass das Gefühl der Befreiung vom Superstarstaus des "Heart of Gold"-Interpreten, der bewusst "in den Straßengraben" fuhr, eine Rolle gespielt hat. Allerdings spricht die eher aggressive Grundstimmung in der unterbezahlten Band gegen ihren Chef dagegen. Viel zu wenig beachtet ist das künstlerisch revolutionäre Konzept, eine Liveplatte nur mit neuen Songs aufzunehmen, statt die alten Hits auf Tour zu recyceln und damit die Publikumserwartungen zu erfüllen. Die eher düsteren Themen (Junkies, Schulhofschlägereien, Großstadt etc.) liegen fernab von der Coutrysentimentalität, die damals Mainstream war. Der tiefe Pessimismus des Albums stellte sich bald als die Wahrheit über die ganze Entwicklung der Rockkultur heraus. Das Kunstwerk stellt eine Entscheidung für die bittere Wahrheit gegen falsche Schönheit dar, was wohl auf lange Sicht nicht nur wahr und richtig, sondern auch ästhetisch ansprechender ist. Schönheit ohne Wahrheit gibt es wohl letztlich nicht. Das Cover zeigt das Tourpublikum als eher abstoßende Masse vor einer schmutzigen Bühne, auf der eine Rose liegt. Von einer Woodstock-Hippieästhetik ("we are stardust, we are golden") ist so gar nichts mehr zu erkennen. Diesen entscheidenden Moment einer bitteren Erkenntnis fängt "Time fades away" ein. Weder für den Interpreten, noch für das Publikum dürfte das angenehm gewesen sein. Es ist interessant, dass es ein Kanadier und kein Amerikaner war, der sich gegen die große Lüge in der Rockmusik entschieden hat und damit nach eigenem Bekunden Johnny Rotten inspiriert, also die Revolution in der Rockkultur vorbereitet hat. Niemand kann eine Idee aufhalten, deren Zeit gekommen ist.

Darüber, warum N.Y. selbst bisher einer CD-Veröffentlichung von "Time fades away" nicht zugestimmt hat, ist ja schon viel spekuliert worden. Wegen Flying-V? Nicht so guter Sound-Qualität? Warum auch immer - hier liegt dieses Schmuckstück vor, und zwar gekoppelt mit dem Sound-Track zu "Where the Buffalo roam", an dem N.Y. mit Orchesterstücken beteiligt ist, und bei dem Größen wie Jimmy Hendrix, The Temptations, Bill Murray, CCR und Bob Dylan mitwirken. Ein interessantes Stück Musikgeschichte, sehr zu empfehlen.
