These plates are the perfect (medium) size for a discreet portion of pasta. They are too shallow for soup in my opinion, it would be hard to spoon and would get cold, but a small salad is a possibility. I really bought them for pasta, which is what they seem to have been made for.They have that solid, pillyvut quality and the pattern is wonderful and can be mixed and match with blacks, whites or other solid color dishes. Stripes would even be fun.Note, I have the matching cappuccino demitasse and saucers. I know they say these dishes are dishwasher safe, but one of my demitasses in the same pattern cracked in the dishwasher. So if you buy this line, I recommend hand washing.

The best soup plate I ever had. I have used it many many times, not only for soup but for pasta and salad as well. It still looks good as new. It does not stain, does not chip. It is not cheap, but it is worth it. I am slowly building a set one piece at a time.

This is sometimes a difficult pattern to find. Good price and got here almost overnight in excellent shape. Good selection of other items in this line as well.
